After reading this article, absinthe may get legal status in the United states, it being the only substance that has been made illegal, then later legal. However it seems the ingredient "thujone" will be heavily regulated and/or reduced.

Here is my question to you European drinkers, if you have any experience with teh drink: what is the effect of thujone?

and overall, tell me if the drink is worth drinking, I've been wanting to try some for a while, heh.

It won't be real absinthe, unless you live where they make it or travel you won't drink the real stuff. The only **** that gets around these days is just that, ****.

And as for the effect, you may aswell take the worst acid you can find and drink half a bottle of vodka.

We might have absinthe over here, but I doubt it. Either way, if it's the "real" stuff, 80%+ alcohol, it's an illegal narcotic.

As for your statement "what?", there hasn't been any proof of the original absinthe creating hallucinogenic effects. Thujone does not make you hallucinate. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thujone

Unless you add acid to the mix, I highly doubt you'll be having hallucinations and so forth like if you took LSD. It has been reported that it causes a "lucid drunkenness" though, and that it works as a psychedelic drug to a certain point (no doubt thanks to the high alcohol content).

As for legalising it, I see nothing worse with wormwood than with booze. If you want to take a drug that causes muscle spasms and convulsions, knock yourselves out (possibly literally, a friend of mine in Britain said he blacked out a short time after drinking a few shots of it within a minute). Not my idea of a good night on the town though.

We have it in Aussieland (least I think its the real deal)

Personally I don't fancy it, I think its quite overrated and really one of those "try it once, just to say you've tried it" things.

So if it comes out in the states, head to the local bar, do a few shots with your mates and never touch it again.

Only substance made illegal, then legal again?

Jeez man, Learn some damn History. Ever heard of PROHIBITION?

As for said legalization... It'll be watered down and controlled. That's what they do here.

Truth. But that's also more expensive. Much more expensive.

Besides, Americans can't hold their liquor well without being alcoholics anyway, so it's better off watered down in American markets.

Pfft, us aussies hold our liquor quite well indeed!

Actually I might be wrong, but I think I saw an energy drink with Absinthe in it that they're selling around here. Haven't tried it yet.

Be careful, is all I can say.

Regardless, I don't think anyone should have absinthe. I've heard far too many horror stories.

That's it there, I'm not an absinthe drinker anyway, like all aussies I prefer a cold beer over pretty much anything.

I know about the prohibition, hurr. I just don't personally categorize alcohol as a whole with one substance in itself. I'm sorry I possibly ruined your night on not reciting my history essay.

There are at least a couple brands of absinthe sold at MLCC (Manitoba Liquor Control Commission) stores here. As far as personal experience and anecdotal evidence leads me, legitimate, store-bought absinthe isn't going to do anything beyond what you'd expect an 80% alcohol by volume (160-proof) liquor would do. That's not to say that bona fide absinthe, as it was intended, will not have some more unique effects; I'm just saying that brands carried by our LC are basically high-alcohol, wormwood liquors; they aren't really anything beyond that.

Also, if I recall correctly, a bottle of the stuff is a bit on the pricey side. I don't recall seeing a bottle at the LC for less than $60 CDN.

...as for less-than-legitimate absinthe... well, one of my buddies had made his own and drank a good bit of it. Aside from him not remembering how he wound up where he did a few hours after drinking it (and, for whatever reason, being scared half to death by the sight of this footbridge we have in the city), there wasn't too much to tell o_O

Likewise.. personally I think the talk that spreads about the drink is ridiculous. Yeah, if you have three or four shots you'll probably go mad but, then, it's powerful stuff. The last time I actually had a shot I followed it, at the barking of my friends, with a shot that was 10% stronger (according to the label), tasted like vomit, and I still didn't see any pink elephants.

It's just alcohol. There's no magic juice in there. :p

And I liked the taste of absinthe.. But that's just me.

If I remember correctly it only "kicks in" if you drink it in a certain way, not like regular shots.
I'm not quite sure, but I think it involved a spoon of sugar and a lighter.

well, its in plentiful supply around here. as for what its like, imagine some form of washing up liquid mixed up with a bottle of vodka. TBH its a little overrated, if you do actually manage to get some it'll be one rather expensive anticlimax

my experiances with absynthe have been varied, depending on how much we've paid for a bottle, and how hard it was to get hold of. the best we ever had cost about £40, for 1.5litres. we did the whole pouring it through heated sugar thing and it was ****ing amazing...

of course, the £18 bottles you can get from supermarkets isn't bad either, but it just gets you drunk, rather than off your tits high...
