standby

Is there a way I can put my laptop on standby, and have it stay connected to the internet so that I don't disconnect from MSN etc? I mean, I like to leave my comp on over night, but the fan can really get annoying. Maybe I just really misunderstand the concept of S3 standby and 'always on'...

I have been seeing this more frequently. Sometimes I'll forget to turn my computer off and it will be working fine, but when I get home I pull it out of stand by, and I if I try to click a window, desktop item, or something in the task bar, there is no response. I know nobody is touching it...
