Detuning is fine, alot of guitarists detune. Standard tuning is to plain, some people ture down to get a dark sound, just look at Tool's guitarist.

Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets album both have just meaningless solos in my opinion. They just seem like they are trying to show off, rather then blend it well. I'm not going to argue you anymore, so whatever, they may have some well blended solos, but for the most part they are bad...
