On maps like guru and namek, when you get towards the edge/top of the map, they push you away. It really is quite annoying, whats the purpose of them?

To piss people off, I gather. I've blown myself up a few times from that.

Battle Arena, Namek, and Guru all have it (I think one more map has it too). It's nice to here that the new maps don't have it though :).

It was a good idea prior to v1.1b but, as you must know, it is more of a pain in the ass, instead of the helpful force it was intended to be.

The reason behind it was so that if your back was to the skybox you wouldn't have beams blowing up in your face, it also helped keep your view in 3rd person and any other skybox bugs. We have a new system though, it works well.

FreeDoM so you mean you fixed the sky-problem (when you get near it) without the things that push you from it? Did you possibly used a transparent brush before the sky brush in every map? lol :D

I'm not sure on the physics of it, however you can fire pretty much everywhere without killing yourself, not just the skybox, but walls n such too.
