The reason behind it was so that if your back was to the skybox you wouldn't have beams blowing up in your face, it also helped keep your view in 3rd person and any other skybox bugs. We have a new system though, it works well.
FreeDoM so you mean you fixed the sky-problem (when you get near it) without the things that push you from it? Did you possibly used a transparent brush before the sky brush in every map? lol
