Star Trek Online is going free-to-play. We've known for a while, but just when and why it's going free has eluded us, until now. Cryptic's decision to remove the subscription cost from their most recent MMO wasn't sudden, according to Stephen D'Angelo, Executive Producer on STO and Chief Technical Officer. "We've always wanted the game to be free-to-play," he says, "in fact we tried to make it free-to-play at the original launch, but our publisher [Atari] didn't want us doing that so we didn't do that." Instead of almost two years ago, the switch to free-to-play will occur on January 17, 2012.

Interesting information. I actually played this for a little while.
The starship battles are pretty fun. There's a vast galaxy to explore.

I would definitely recommend it, even if your not a fan of star trek.

Indeed. I also played it for a little bit and I really enjoyed it. Can't wait until this is free. I kept destroying the borg in the beginning when I was on the planet. But they kept coming back . Damn borg.

Obviously because subscription numbers were terrible. They weren't taking in enough cash. Bring on the cash shops.

Ticks me off a little that silver (free) users are very limited in chat features for 20 hours of game-play. While it's not that bad, you can't directly ask for help in the chat. Other than that.. I don't see much of a difference between free & paid users actually.

The holographic doctor for the win! Oh wait that wasnt a choice? I picked it anyways.

I played this game for about a month, the starship battles are cool. Also you can explore quite a bit.
The ground battles fall short, the control feels stiff, not really easy to play.
But I'd say its a great game to check out, especially for free.
