yep i'm back.

i've got another compiling prob but i'm not really sure wot is wrong.
i've gone through 20 or so maps of a similar aspect (gensurf landscape, floating spawn points and other such goodies)
and they all seem to end up with the same prob.
when i compile, csg, bsp and vis all compile fine but rad doesn't copile well at all :
6630 faces
Create Patches : 26032 base patches
0 opaque faces
855716 square feet [123223104.00 square inches]
1 direct lights

"BuildFacelights:
(2932.69 seconds)
visibility matrix : 40.4 megs
Failed to allocate s_vismatrixError: Memory allocation failure
Description: The program failled to allocate a block of memory.
Howto Fix: Likely causes are (in order of likeliness) : the partition holding the swapfile is full; swapfile size is smaller than required; memory fragmentation; heap corruption

----- END hlrad -----"

no matter how much space is on the drive it always has this prob (i deleted cstrike to free up 300 megs more). then after compile finishes in such fashion, i copy the bsp into esf folder but it doesn't show up on the map menu.

xtra details:
i use gensurf for terrain
vis gives loadsa leaf portal errors (i ignore them as some sources seem to say)
i use zoner's hl tools

The swapfile is an area on your harddrive that is used like RAM when all of your RAM is tied up. It's that virtual memory stuff. Go into control panel, system, and then advanced I think. You should see some stuff about virtual memory. Make sure you have a pretty good sized amount. Also, try to free up as much memory as you can just before you compile.

not enuff memory.... and for such a small map! i looked in da virtual memory bit and find it doesn't really do that much, got enuff spare space already. unless i uninstall diablo 2 which takes up about 1.5 gigs!!!

and to dj-ready.... i can't help being lazy!!!:)

Uninstalling programs has nothing to do with the size of the swapfile. You have to go in manually to the control panel and change the size. Uninstall programmings and deleting your personal files wont fix the problem.
