M$ released the name for their new OS formerly code named Longhorn. Windows Vista. The beta is out for testers now. I personally can't wait for this thing to be released, but it looks like it won't be out until last quarter 2006. Here are some screenshots.

That's the new Windows. I'm impressed. It almost looks like too much. Lot more eye candy, and I remember the XP gui changing a lot between the beta and it's release, so I'm only expecting it to get better.

Also, if you noticed, Microsoft has dropped the 'My' prefix on this new OS. No more 'My Computer' or 'My Documents,' things will just be known as 'Computer' and 'Music.'

Among the tons of changes, things like getting rid of the registry system completly, and a new File System for HDs, performance is sure to improve, at least... in theory.

So that's what Longhorn became. I'm glad they got rid of the huge grey sidebar they had in early beta photos.

Looks like they went to town with the opacity and eye-candy. Good stuff. Getting rid of the registry system eh?

Found this picture on Paul's website. IE7, very interesting.

Notice how much it looks like Firefox, tabs and all.

Couple more screenshots:

Buttons 'light up,' when the mouse moves over them, cool I say.

I'm betting with the size increase of icons and buttons comes a price increase too?

Hm, they're releasing screenshots and not threatening to sue the people that spread them now?

Eh, doesn't look bad, too many people decide what OS they want just by how flashy it looks anyway.

New file system? 5 bucks says they call it NTFS2. XD

No, from what I remember they're calling it WinFS.
The Vista name came about the meaning of it, which I can't remember, and the fact that this is the sixth OS on NT. NT VIsta.

Looks all right. I'm more interesting in how it reacts with games.

so when this does come out..Is it just gonna change the way things look or will it actually go faster or something?

I'm glad they are going for the shiny..Transparent window sides was a good idea.

Ooh! Pointless graphical changes! :p

For the record, "Windows Vista" is a stupid name.

Oh, at first I thought it was Windows Visa, like, it merged with the credit card company.

Dunno why they didn't go with "Super Windows" or "Windows -Ultimate edition"

Now those names scream professionalism.

Heh :]

Vista > XP as a name, at least it means something. 'eXPerience'? Give me a break.

It doens't look much different then XP now...

I'd like to know more changes other then it's just "music" instead of "my music" Whoa! I could have done that myself.

And they are getting rid of the registry thing-a-ma-jig big deal. What's that change?

Sure it looks flashy, but does that mean it slows it down?

Now that someone types that out...It looks like a simley face...MAybe, just maybe , that is what the XP really means for windows. But i wonder where "Vista" came up.

Of course the only changes we can see are graphical. I think I read somewhere that it is supposed to do things faster, like changing users and starting up. Maybe they will manage to keep this one from being pirated a billion times over.
