CRT monitors don't have a native resolution. They just have a maximum.
Although there is a optimal resolution for every size CRT monitor.

17 inch CRT -> 1024x768
19 inch CRT -> 1280x960(NOT 1024)
etc.

But it can defer from model to model.

I thought the newest Nvidia drivers for their 8xxx cards allowed to change your resolution in playing games. As in, You have an 1280x1024 screen, but the game only allows up to 1280x800, so the Nvidia drives don't stretch the image, but rather show black bars on the top and bottom of your screen. Basically, you will play with 1280x800 on a 1280x1024 screen without f-ing up your image quality.
