and why?

basically, post an example of who you believe is the best band in the world, and your reasons why.

while i love metal, house, trance, and classical music. i would have to say that Queen, are the best band in the world. my reason for this, is that not only are they british (lol), but i can't think of any other band who have influenced not only music, but entire generations of people, and are still doing so.

whenever you sing "we are the champions", they wrote that. the same for "another one bites the dust".

there is no other band on earth that has written such iconic, epic, and generally anthemous songs.

Tool because of their ability to combine quality music with lyrics that harder to figure out than a Rubik's Cube.

I can't say which band is exclusively the best in my opinion, as i have quite a few of them.

Death could be, maybe. I love how Chuck combined trivial, mind pressing questions about humanity to lyrics ( see individual thought patterns , for example ).

Tool competes here as well.

Queen for the inspiration it has done to so many people in the world.
Also, Opeth would be placed to this list as well thanks to their extremely strong progressive stuff.

I'd also nominate most of the ambient jungle / drum and bass ( ESPECIALLY the oldschool stuff from 90's - to give a clue of difference, listen to this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDuMCxr0ENM ), turntablism, hip / trip-hop, reggae, deep house, acid house, acid nu-jazz, nu-jazz , dark ambient, post-nuclear ambient dj's for the absolute chillax stuff they do.

Jamiroquai would be a great example of Soul, Acid Jazz, Soul, Electro and Funk.

I'll have to agree with Lee there. Been a fan of Queen since pretty much the day I was born, as my dad had some LPs of them, so I grew up with queen. I even remember crying when Freddie died, and I was only 6 at that time!

Though, I can't seem to love the current Queen. Paul Rodgers just ain't Freddie Mercury and the current Queen feels more or less like a coverband now :(

Rather funny coincidence though (zomg thread!), but I went and bought Queens Greates Hits I, II & III + Made in Heaven yesterday, and today this thread is up :O

Queen is awesome. Their not my favorite band in the world, but their pretty damn close.

I'm going to have to go with Sublime for my favorite band.

I enjoy Iron Maiden more, but when it comes to best.. These guys got a 60-year-old lady on stage to announce them at the top of her lungs as "THE BEST BAND IN THE WHOLE FREAKIN' UNIVERSE!", and I don't think Iron Maiden could convince a 60-year-old woman they're the best band in the universe.
If it weren't for Rage/Maiden though, Immortal Technique would be up there. Not technically a band, I guess.

why?

They were pioneers of music, they covered a diverse broad range of genre's, extremely experimental, technically brilliant scores, broke taboo's, and inevitably changed popular culture and music forever.

An independent band made of three guys who all alternate playing guitar, percussion, and vocals that originated in 1996. Their sound is eclectic, with some songs sounding reggae, while others funk, and others rock. Their vocals are what get me the most, lots of harmony with all three singing.

They set the record for the largest Independent show with a reunion concert in 2004 (they are split up and working their own projects now). 110,000 people showed up for a concert that was billed at around 30,000. Pretty good for guys who never signed to a label, and had most of their publicity done through word of mouth and Napster.

I grew up on Queen, but in terms of classic rock I'm gonna have to go with Black Sabbath or Pink Floyd. It's very hard to try and get a definitive answer for something like this. I think Meshuggah and Lamb of God should be on the list too, but there's just too many bands out there.

Somehow when I hear The Beatles, it sounds like the same love song all over again, pop music rhythm.

They got there good songs, but really, most of them are pop.

And yes I know pop is everything that is popular, by "pop" I mean love songs with slow, emotional rhythm.
