Okay, I've been saveing up for a new computer.

We are talking Canadian $$$$

I have a friend who is willing to build me a computer for free(!!), so anyways, I currently have $1400.00 in my bank right now, and I am planing on buying a computer WITHOUT a VIDEO CARD. I will insert my old video card into it, which is DX9. I will upgrade to DX10 in mid-2007.

So I want to buy a computer, including a case and moniter(not keyboard of mouse), so should I:

A) Spend my $1400.00 on the parts now, (PLEASE TELL ME IF $1400.00 IS ENOUGH FOR GOOD PARTS PLUS A GOOD 17' MONITER)

or

B) Wait till I have $2000.00 to spend on parts(not including video card)

I want to know if it's worth waiting for another month till I get $2000.00, will I be able to get a MUCH better comp for $2000.00 or just a slightly better one?

EDIT: We are talking PCI-E here. My card is PCI-E.

First we need to know what slot your video card goes into before we can go any further.

No we don't. If he is already aware of what it type of card it is then it should be fine. The more skilled people are here to help =P. I'd assume he would of done his research on that too before hand if need be.

I decided to go through tigerdirect and take a look at some specs and pricing.

If you are wanting to wait to build a new computer all in one go along with a new card, it might be an option (it's what I've done in the past, build it all in one go and buy all specs at the same time). Intel are planning to release a 1,333mhz fsb revision of conroe sometime soon too. There's also room in your budget for a better sound card (X-fi) should you not want to use onboard sound.

Excellent, but the ram seems like a great price, are those surely Canadian prices?

Oh, I didn't realize that straghit off. I'll go to tigerdirect's Canadian site and edit my above post, apologies for the mix up.

Edit:
Actually, the cost of those parts in Canadian dollars would be 1,326.04 CAD, but I'll double check the prices for you to make sure of price differences. Being from Australia I thought Tigerdirect was only a Canadian e-tailer.

Edit2:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2768809&CatId=2432 - ASUS P5B Deluxe $253.99

Sub total: $1334.93 CAD. The config I posted previously would of cost you $1461.93 in Canadian dollars, So I changed the PSU and memory in this config. Would be interesting though if you could buy the setup I recommended before from Tigerdirect in usa and pay the price in CAD rather then buying from their Canada store, assuming postage & handling costs won't be so overly high and within your budget.

Actually there is never a good "time" to buy a computer, something is allways better waiting around the corner, otherwise Overlord seems on to be right on the money, And I would go with a ThermalTake Xaser case, those things look hawt!

The best time is to get a new build all in one go IMO, but either way you get a better pc out of it and some good performance increases depending on what you are upgrading from. Either way you look at it, manafacturers have to make money off the current product for their profit which could also lead to funding to design better hardware in the future.

While the Xaser does look nice, I'm looking at getting a case with a 25cm case fan on the side for my new build so I can run it on a lower speed (technically it can push more air, so therefore running it at a lower speed should make my pc quiet and cool). Best of both worlds :).

Hm. Some problems. One: The RAM you're giving him has a coupon that expires tomorrow, making it $35 more expensive.

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2240437&CatId=2261
This one expires at the end of the month.

Ultra power supplies are terrible. They really are. This is much better:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503498&CatId=0

You also have him with a DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive and a regular DVD/CD reading drive? Uh. Ok. Let's minus one of those.
So just this: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=1696969&sku=P725-3050

The motherboard you've chosen is also rather expensive, and is for Crossfire. You don't even know if he has an ATi card, if he would want crossfire, or if he even has PCI-E. I'm going to go ahead and recommend this basic PCI-E mobo, though: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2487399&CatId=2432

If he doesn't have a PCI-Express card, then I'll (or we'll, whatever) have to work out a different, but still cheap, board for him.

Also, you're setting him up with a very expensive processor, something he probably doesn't need. And you've also failed to leave enough money for a "GOOD 17" LCD MONITOR".
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2503395&CatId=2396

A fine alternative CPU; and with the money that I've saved you from Overlord's costly plan, a monitor! Just as you asked.

Black LG 17" or Gray LG 17".

<hr>
So, all together:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz Processor - $290.00
MSI P965 Platinum Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard - $190.99
OCZ Dual Channel Special Ops XTC 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory - $287.99
Seagate / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive - $106.99
Pioneer DVR-R111D OEM Beige 16x DVD?RW - $54.99
Enermax / FMA II / 535-Watt / ATX V2.2 / SLI-Ready / SATA-Ready / RoHS / Power Supply - $114.99
Black LG 17" or Gray LG 17" - $209.99

He can get whatever case he wants. He's the one who has to look at it, not you. Total, therefore, is $1255.94 CAD.

Heh, I was mainly looking what Tigerdirect had in terms of psus that aren't expensive plus could provide more then 18a on their rails. Carry on.

I'll do as I please thanks, not your concern. I'm sure him and his friend verified whether or not he has a pci-e card already seeing as he said his friend is gonig to build his system... Oh and on your other comments, I'll do as I please. No one is perfectly secure.

Some people enjoy the fact that when they want to do some dvd copying, that they won't have to go through and insert a dvd into the same drive, they can just shove a blank disc in the burner and the original in the in the dvd-rom.

Oh, btw it's Overlord, not Saiyan_Overlord (formerly).

No you won't Overlord. You will do exactly as I please when you're being unfair and rude to other members. Keep it up, and you won't be able to do anything.

If he wants to copy a DVD, many programs copy the image to a HDD and then burn from that. There's no reason to spend more money if he can just use the vastness of 320GBs.

Heh, the fact that I can burn straghit from here to there is a time saver, not to mention it saves me having to reach down to my case 4 times to put it in, take it out, put a blank in, take the blank out when it's done, compared to doing the process twice.

Meh, different opinions.

He never stated it was a newer video card. He never stated it WASN'T a PCI-e card.

So, with that being said, I figured, in order to help him out, I needed to know what kind of video card slot his video card went into before I could go picking out his mother board, which then would of course determine what kind of ram he can get. And all that fun stuff. I may be new to computers, but i'll be damned if I don't know the basics. Thank you very much.

:EDIT:

So I'll end it with this: Barny, if you want help from me i need to know what slot your video card goes into. And I'll let Smith take it from here, he'll save you money better than I could.

A fine alternative CPU; and with the money that I've saved you from Overlord's costly plan, a monitor! Just as you asked.

Black LG 17" or Gray LG 17".

<hr>
So, all together:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz Processor - $290.00
MSI P965 Platinum Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard - $190.99
OCZ Dual Channel Special Ops XTC 2048MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory - $287.99
Seagate / 320GB / 7200 / 16MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive - $106.99
Pioneer DVR-R111D OEM Beige 16x DVD?RW - $54.99
Enermax / FMA II / 535-Watt / ATX V2.2 / SLI-Ready / SATA-Ready / RoHS / Power Supply - $114.99
Black LG 17" or Gray LG 17" - $209.99

He can get whatever case he wants. He's the one who has to look at it, not you. Total, therefore, is $1255.94 CAD.

No, you're the one being asinine, Overlord. He asked a perfectly reasonable question. Don't you dare begin to knock down other people, when you yourself aren't perfectly secure.
Everything looks good there Smith, but would it be a big step up if I wanted a E600 processor instead?

And would the E600 offerr much better performence?

It depends where you're looking. You'll notice it if you do a lot of video editing, where raw CPU speed is what you need. You won't notice it nearly as much in games, where you'll probably be looking at a limit imposed by your video card. Is there a difference? Yes. Is that difference worth over $110? Ehh...

Okay thanks, but once Vista and next-gen games come out, would a E600 processor last a lot longer without needing an upgrade then the E400?
