In terms of Half-Life and many other video games, a WAD file contains 2D graphics. Most often map textures.

You can look here, or search elsewhere to find other implications of WAD files, but they all look like they serve the same purpose as they do in HL.

Use Wally to edit Half-Life and Quake's WAD file format.
