Uses for a laptop?

Well, I recently discovered my mom's old laptop (which failed to connect to the internet), is stored away. I found it and now I'm wondering, are there any uses for this laptop?

the specs are:

-1.60 ghz
-504 MB of ram
~37 GB of memory

I'm in no way going to upgrade it, so what are some uses I could use with this laptop?

I really think it COULD be useful but not sure for what.

If anything we're gonna give it to my dad for when he takes it on trips, he's a truck driver.

I'm thinking about using it for word processing, and trying to figure out if I can get anything else out of it.

You can, like, take it everywhere with you. On vacation, for example. So you won't need a book if you're bored and play Minesweeper instead XD

But seriously, the fact that it's mobile makes it useful enough. + It's good enough for anything basic, except games, 3D modelling and stuff like that.

Well, once you format it, it should be good to go, and it'll be rid of whatever useless files are on there currently. In my case, Word Processing is a real plus. Also, you could install some emulators on there perhaps, just for mobile gaming.

I guess it's useful for music and videos also.

You really can't do anything other than word processing with it. It won't handle video's. Porn will only work if it's pictures only, and even then, the pictures will load slowly.

If it is powerful enough to play DVDs, you got a mobile DVD player. But not being confined to one room for internet/paper typing is awesome.

I'm trying to think of when I'd actually need a mobile word processor, unless I was a writer or soemthing.

I'm sure in some way it would eventually be useful for school.

Since when is a 1.6ghz laptop with 512mb of ram and a 40gb hard drive not capable of handling porn? I have a 700mhz P3 laptop with 256mb of ram and a 40gb hard drive that works just fine for my mobile porn purposes. I also had a 1.1ghz laptop that could handle UT3, so I think there are plenty of uses for your laptop.

I'd make use of it that way, as well as watching movies from an external HDD.

normally laptops don't need much energy. So you could use the laptop to save some €/$/... if you use the laptop instead of the PC if possible.

Another solution; if you dont need the mobile "feature" of the laptop then install linux, but it somewhere where you dont see it ( you will not even touch the hardware of the laptop anymore in the future...thx to SSH ). And then here is your private homeserver, which would be able to handle, samba( windows shares ), torrents( yeah download all the time.), webserver, ...

torrents ARE NOT ILLEGAL. Okay 99% of the ppl use it for illegal things, but I've downloaded torrents for several linux distributions, open office, ...

Dude, first download windows xp performance edition, it will only eat 150-200 MB of ram. Then get all codecs you can for WMP. Then when you are not at home and get bored you can see a movie. As you can see word processing is not the only thing you can do. Check if you can buy some cheap 512 MB of ram that is compatible and add it.

Btw update your display drivers, in case you have a Nvidia and dont know where to get laptop new display drivers go to http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ and you should be able to play some 2004-2005 and maybe some 2006 games (with 1GB RAM). ESF will definatly work lol.
