If you're making the tree for use in an ESF map, however, you definately don't want to do it the way those tutorials show. You'd want to create a simple trunk, and then use color-key transparent textures for branches/leaves. I have no idea how you do that in 3ds Max, but I could demonstrate in MS3D if that's your intent.
