Is a woman in a 1928 film who appears to have a cell phone glued to her ear in fact a time traveler? That's what some conspiracy theorists think this eerie scene (video below) from Charlie Chaplin's 1928 film, "The Circus" is telegraphing, or rather phoning, and that the woman -- who looks about as time-traveler-ish as Martha Stewart, is indeed a voyager from the vortex of time and space.

Belfast filmmaker George Clarke, a Chaplin fan, says he was watching the "behind the scenes of 'The Circus' " and was "stumped" at what he saw.

"I kept winding it back, playing it; winding it back, playing it back, and I couldn't explain this," he says. "I want to get this out there to let people try and give me an idea, because right now the only conclusion that I can come to -- it sounds absolutely ridiculous, I'm sure, to some people -- it's a time traveler" Although, as Clarke notes, the "old woman ... looks like a man in drag ... on a mobile phone."
While I all for time travel, it's been proven as far as the laws of physics are concerned, you can go forward in time, but not backwards.

I think this guy, and others, are seeing what they WANT to see, not what it is, a person holding up their jacket to not be seen on the camera.

In the future, your reach will transcend the boundaries of time.. unless you're calling with T-mobile, they have crappy, to no reception in the 16th,18th and 19th century D:

Agreed.

Even if she was talking into a mobile phone, without satellites and **** to send and receive signals, I can't imagine who she'd be talking to.

Not that I for a second think this is an instance of time travel, but if someone were capable of traveling backward through time, whatever principles allowed this would probably be extended to comm.

It's clearly a dimensional tear... which makes me ashamed that Earth 358 alread had cellphones in the 1920s.

It still wouldn't make any sense. Cellphones are one of the fastest growing technologies in the world right now. In a couple of years, chances are that cellphones as we know will not exist anymore, but rather be integrated in stuff like clothing. If you take in the account of technological advancements that we would need to make in order to make time travel technology viable, I don't see why we would still have handheld communicators by that time.

And obviously, if they know they have to blend in with their clothing, why would they walk around with a cellphone in their hands? It just doesn't add up.

Presuming said person is a time traveler, why are we automatically assuming it's a cellphone when whatever is in the person's hand can't be seen? Time traveling opens up all sorts of technological branches. Best not to limit them to what we're using today.

As for why have it out in the first place, why not? No one knows what it is. It's Hollywood. It's probably a prop, right? Dress the part, leave the rest to the imagination.
