In the middle of completely refurbishing his five-bedroom house, Connan Gupta felt he deserved a week off.

It is a decision he is now regretting because 15 squatters took advantage of his short absence to occupy the £700,000 property.

The jobless Italians changed the locks and have taken up residence along with their three dogs and two cats.

They claim the fact they cannot afford to rent gives them the right to take over the Victorian property in Camberwell, South-East London.

Police are powerless to intervene because squatting is a civil rather than criminal offence.

So they go into his house, take it over, and are living there, a bunch of Teenagers, it seems, and he can't get it back.

I'd wanna take baseball bats to their heads.

And the UK wonders why people call it a weak country.

Squatting is legit, but it only goes for abandoned buildings. Something like this is a hole in the law i guess.

Can't he just shut off the utilities, so they have no water or electricity?

Yeah, bout that.

They said he can't because that'd be like cruelty or something.

These people are living in a 700,000 Euro house, for who knows how long, with no forseen consequences, for free. They said he has hundreds of DVD's, a hot tub, pool, ect, the guy has a ritzy place and the law is basically allowing these people to live in it. It's ******* so wrong.

I don't anyways, but I'm not in the UK.

Christ, just saying, in the US, this would take 30 minutes to resolve.

It would still take atleast a month for them to cancel the utilities, what is he supposed to do till then?

And Mkilbridge, if this was in US, not only would it be resolved in less then 30 mins, he'd get $100,000 for suing them.

Either they have a house with no utilities, or they have no house at all. They will stay.

Still, the guy who ownes the house...well...ownes the house. Doesn't he have legal rights to throw these people out of the house, with help of the police? Basically, they stole his house, while it is his property, it isn't an abandoned house or something.

Now with Kung-Fu action!

Well that's a horrible loop-hole in our legal system. I thought, from the topic title, that it would be about our budget cuts or crippled economy but this is a "pleasant" surprise. Whilst I think being able to kill them would be a little too extreme, it'd be logical if he had the legal rights to get them removed.

So, if you are living in the UK, and you plan to go away for a week.
1) tell your neighbours you're currently living there
2) Install camera's that tape yourself 24/7 with dates and store it somewere else so you can access it when you can't enter your own home.

And then, just maybe, everything might be resolved in two weeks.
