What are the measurements based on?

The strongest nation in history? I don't think there's a real answer to that.

The United States is an empire?

I am wavering between the Spanish and Roman empires when it comes to strength.

What the Mongolians did with Genghis Kahn, is only rivaled by the British Navy's domination of port cities.

But, you can have an argument for what Spain/Portugal have done with Central and South America.

Most powerful? U.S. hands down. You should watch that show "Future Weapons". The stuff they show our military using on that show boggles my mind. And this is just the stuff civilians are actually ALLOWED to see. Numbers don't matter in war anymore, but technology does. U.S.'s technology can annihilate anyone in a straight battle with our current weapons, like the Metalstorm and the latest version of the Stealth Bomber. Those two things could decimate a vast majority of the great armies of old, but not totally just because of ammo-limits.

I assume when we asked which country was strongest.. we were grouping them within the same time period in history....
Of course I could just say~~~~~~
"of course USA because nukes pwn swords any day!" but unfortunately, our enemies were smart and they used guns when we did, bombs when we did.. we aren't special....

I beg to differ. We've had the edge in straight combat for a long-ass time.

Once again... this isn't about the most powerful modern military... it's about the largest historical control of territory.

Yet you're the only country to have unleashed a nuclear catastrophe.

Vapourizing 80,000 people and killing 60,000 more slowly with radiation poisoning doesnt exactly sound like "straight combat"

Its that kind of arrogance that makes people hate the US.

Anyway, in terms of what empire changed the world, it would be the roman empire hands down, after all it was the first army that ever consisted of career soldiers, instead of conscripts, they created the blueprint for warfare that is still followed today.

Actually the US (if it was an empire) would be atleast 12th... you forgot the Ottoman Empire which should be about 9th.
At it's largest size in 1683, the Ottoman Empire had a land mass of about 12,000,000 km2.

In 1921 the British Empire included a quarter of the world population, about a quarter of world land mass, and had territory in nearly every time zone.

The "Commonwealth of Nations" is made up of largely the same countries that were part of the British Empire.
The main difference now, is that membership is voluntary and no one country is in control. Queen Elizabeth II is still head of the Commonwealth.
