Is taking away your porn:

Mr. Roo said:
AUSTRALIANS will be forced to contact their internet service provider to avoid having their access to the web restricted.

The restrictions are planned by the Federal Government to give greater protection to children from online pornography and violent websites.

Under the plan, all internet service providers will be required to provide a "clean" feed to households and schools, free of pornography and other inappropriate material.

Any internet users who want to "opt out" of the clean feed will have to contact their ISP.
I don't like the idea of any government censoring the internet, regardless of their good intentions. This is the kind of nanny state crap I hope I won't ever see in this country. If you don't want complete access to the net, you should have to call them up and ask them to censor it. It isn't something that should be done automatically. I also don't like the idea of them checking a box next to your name that says, "He wants porn. Possibly of the horse variety."

It just seems extremely lame to say "Think of the children!" when taking away our freedom (to look at gorilla porn).

It sounds stupid that you have to call to get your internet uncensored. The other way would make much more sense.
And who decides what to filter? If it'd be anythink like the filters in my school, then the most stupid things would be filtered.
We can't even read some wikipedia articles (e.g. when they deal with war or murder).

How many porn sites are there, and how would they ban them all? Ridiculous proposition, as it is impossible to follow through on.

It isn't impossible. They could very easily just block everything with certain words in it, removing everyone's access to more than half the internet. School computers do a pretty good job of blocking just about everything, short of google, so I don't see why the Australian government wouldn't be able to do the same.

If you want an example of a country censoring the internet, just take a look at China. They block words like independence and freedom. Where do you start with censorship and where does it end? Do they even have the right to censor information in this day and age?

Thats retarded.
They should better spend money on developing a software that does that kind of stuff on home computers so parents could choose to install it and protect their children if they'd want to.
There might actually is stuff like this around already though.

I'd expect stuff like this from China but not Australia .. wicked.

Good that I'm no aussie ;P

That doesn't even seem logical. Very naive coming from a government. If it's for the children, why must it affect everyone? What percentage of Australia is children?

Silliness really. I mean, if you are against it, you are kind of saying "I want my gangbangs and bomb tutorials", so you have to fight "what would you need these for?" with either "it's an unfair restriction of freedom" or "I like those sites".

The government: looking after your children because you're too useless to do it yourself.

This is actually the first I've heard of it, and gotta agree its highly stupid, its come on the back of a whole string of internet safety campaigns starting with the "You don't know who you could be talking to on the internet" where some sleazy looking pedo is organising meetings with little kids.

Seriously, theres enough filters and crap around where parents can block porn from their computers, they don't need to block it from isp's.

-edit

I just wanna add - **** the children!

It seems that Australia has become the guinea pig for many methods of global security.
