Hold your applause, today is only the first day I started. Thank you to Grega who helped me out with getting started. Now, without further ado, I present to you esf_mountain.

I know, a lot of you are thinking, "Hey Sub, that looks nothing like a mountain! That's not even esf, that's cs!" Well **** you. I don't need your ****.

Hey Sub, that looks nothing like a mountain! That's not even esf, that's cs!

Grega fails as a teacher. :p

Make a room/house is you're starting with box mapping.

Grega just helped with a compile error (I uh, made the floor an entity by mistake), he didn't really teach.

@Grega: Bookmarked that site already

Fine.

ESF Mountain. Happy?

Seriously though, the only thing thats bothering me is how do I make the map bigger? If I make it much bigger than that, the far corners of the map will get all blurry / glitchy like this. Maps like Arrival are much bigger than that room and they don't have that problem. I thought it might be something like lack of a light source, but that didn't fix it.

In hammer select map->properties->Max Viewable Distance

Set it to 16000

If your planing to use a 3D skybox then you should go up to 50 or 60k

You can allso set that outside hammer if you are using batch compiler with ZHLT. It should be in the VIS settings under Max Distance.

Ooh that's a sexy looking map, keep up the good work! I remember my first map ah such a long time ago...just remember that practice makes perfect and giving up doesn't get you anywhere.

Most people quit mapping after about a month, but the few who do break the month barrier usually turn out to be quite capable and make some uber maps.

Now all you have to learn is how to make a skybox, vertex manipulation, importing textures and a few other things :p

No idea how to make a skybox, I guess I'll try doing that today. I figured out how to import textures and how to do vertex manipulation, but it's a bit awkward.

How do you guys make maps that are so big? If I try going over a certain limit, I get errors having to do with the room being too big. Like esf_arrival is a lot bigger than my map and it seems I've hit the limit for room size :S

About the size thing: Hammer is a little pissy, so when you want to make a big map, try not to go all the way to the limit. Leave a space of 32 units on the same side.
As for the sky, google for "Wally", it's a HL/Quake WAD file editor. Make a 16x16 bitmap of a single random color and name it "sky". Then make a box to surround the built map, hollow it and apply the texture.
To change the environment map, look in the map properties for env_map and use the name of any of the files in the env. maps directory. Should be smth_<sky_name>, so just use <sky_name>.

With everything in this quote done, the map should be named esf_mysticmountain.

A special character model should be added somewhere in the map. Mystic Gohan.

A matter of perspective.

Arrival doesnt really fill all the height space possible when looking at hammers grid ^^

But it is well within hammers limits thats for sure. You can however try "extending" the map view limits with a 3D skybox ^^

Hit me up on MSN tomorrow ill tell you how ^^
