Producer J. J. Abrams has stated repeatedly that "it is infinitely too early to be talking about the plot" of Star Trek XI. A number of sources, however, including Variety magazine, an interview with Abrams' childhood friend Greg Grunberg, and, most notably, a promotional poster released by Paramount and StarTrek.com, indicate a prequel movie, spotlighting James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock in their years before Kirk took command of the Starship Enterprise. Though the early report from Variety pointed to a story taking place at Starfleet Academy, with Kirk and Spock in their late teens or early twenties, Abrams specifically referred to those reports as being "premature" and "not entirely accurate." Abrams insists that, "We've made a pact not to discuss any specifics," so confirmed information is not forthcoming.

However, it is clear that Abrams has a particular vision of Star Trek, based on an interview he gave to Variety. "Star Trek to me was always about infinite possibility and the incredible imagination that Gene Roddenberry brought to that core of characters," he said. "It was a show about purpose, about faith vs. logic, about science vs. emotion, about us vs. them. It was its own world, and yet it was our world."

On July 22, at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego, Paramount Pictures began circulating a Star Trek XI promotional poster, believed to have been designed by J. J. Abrams. It bears the the gold of command uniforms and the blue of science/medical uniforms from Kirk's era, and a 2008 release date etched in the lower left-hand corner. Dominating the image is a Starfleet badge of Kirk's era; however, the exact meaning of this badge is unclear. The badge seen in the poster was originally the command emblem for the Enterprise of Kirk's era. At that time, all ships, star bases, and even colonies expressed their own sense of community by creating and wearing such emblems, and the familiar delta shield design belonged exclusively to the USS Enterprise. However, beginning in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the symbol was adopted as the logo for all of Starfleet, and thereafter was used in marketing collateral as a universal symbol of the entire Star Trek franchise.

On January 7, 2007, J.J. Abrams announced that the first draft script for the movie was complete and awaiting what he referred to as "tweaking." He remarked that it will satisfy "non-Trekkers" and that for those who love Star Trek, "the fix that they get will be very satisfying." He has said that it will begin filming in 2007, with a release date of 2008. Contrary to some reports, Abrams pointedly did not confirm details of the film or its plot.

According to writers Orci and Kurtzman, the movie is intended to be titled simply Star Trek. This title, however, has yet to be officially accepted by Paramount.

In the May 2007 issue of Star Trek Magazine, director J.J. Abrams confirmed that James T. Kirk would be appearing in the film. While not going into detail about which era(s) of Kirk's life would be covered by the film, this was the first official confirmation about a character in the film.

XI... that's not a factor of two, is it?

I certainly won't be holding my breath, what with the lackluster Star Trek movies we've been given since 8.

Eh, we've had plenty of movies about kirk, this is ghey.
What else is there? The series has been milked for all it's worth. Two sets of casts are now too old to make more movies, and the last couple TV crews haven't really been movie worthy.

It's old. Let it die so we can cherish what we have.

I demand more TNG based movies!
Seriously, I would even be fine with a new movie based on the original series/crew but its not like they can use ANY of the original actors to play the roles once again... especially if the movie is set to be in their early days.
So screw this movie. I want more Picard. Period.

I think the TNG cast's age is about what the TOS cast was when they started making movies.

There is definitely one more jaunt for the TNG cast!

Come to think of it, I guess they can't stop making Star Trek movies now... we're only one movie short of Star Trek XII: So Very Tired.

...I tried to find it on YouTube, but, alas, I failed.

You can't get back Kirk . . . he's old and fat now.

. . . and he sings badly.

This movie will suck, badly, say hello to another odd numbered suck fest from the franchise.

/me gets my spare quantum torpedo's D:

I loved the original series, the movies with Kirk, Spock and Mcoy, and also TNG.

Voyager was okay and Deep space nine? I didn't bother to watch it, just wasn't my thing.

But to make a movie about Kirk with another actor? that's far beyond milking out a franchise... its an attempt to ruining one.

that's nothing more than a rumor.

I honestly wouldn't mind a DS9 based movie, loved Avery Brooks and the rest of the cast, Dominion arc was just awesome, heh.

If Enterprise has taught me anything, it's that prequels don't tend to turn out as well on the screen as they do on paper.

I'll go see Star Trek XI, but, at this point, I don't have particularly high expectations =\

Dude, it was the 60's. The sliding doors were high tech back then. Bad makeup was the best they could do, especially with a TV budget.

matt damon, not possible, that was like when they said nicholas cage was going to play superman in superman returns, for any specific franchise to use a big name, especially one who could not even bring a close likeness to the character, would be utterly idiotic. look at the batman franchise. no, they would have to use a newcomer to play any original characters to pull it even remotely off, IMO.
