Sega has revealed that the new '2D' Sonic game codenamed 'Project Needlemouse' will in fact be Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 for Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Sega previously confirmed that the zippy blue hedgehog himself will be the star and only playable character in Sonic 4, downplaying the vast array of characters added in recent games such as gun-wielding hedgehogs and cats from alternate dimensions.

The Episode 1 subtitle indicates episodic content, though Sega associate brand manager Ken Balough told GameSpot "I think the best way to view it is as a first part in a much larger adventure" much as Sonic 3 was concluded by Sonic & Knuckles.

Boasting 3D graphics from a 2D perspective, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 will be out for download on Xbox 360, Wii and PS3 this summer. Pricing is yet unknown.

GameSpot was also blessed with the game's first trailer, included below.

There's already a ton of complaints about it. I agree with most of them.

Only time will tell if this can get Sonic out of the ****box he's been in after Sonic & Knuckles.

The Sonic series has gone to **** lately, and Sega has a chance to partially redeem themselves with this game. Let's hope they do good.

What poor kid would actually want to play sonic anyway? :-/
Why wouldn't they want to play Sonic? It's a fantastic series, it's just that most of the newer games are horrible.

People who know what good and original games are? This is one of the best Game Series out there. You are stuck into the newer games. You just dont understand how great an old fashion side scroll is. Have you once played the Original Super Mario, Double Dragons, or even Metal Slug?

This game is one of many that is the origin of Gaming. Without Sonic, I dont think Sega would still even be around.

YES. I heard about this a couple of weeks ago.

AND THE LAST GOOD SONIC GAMES WAS SONIC HEROES THANK YOU VERY MUCH. Sonic Unleashed for PS3/260 was nice, at least the daytime stages. I AM looking towards Sonic 4, but...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T LET THIS BE A MARKETING GIMMICK

I want this to be a game that brings back all the great things from the old series and brings in new things at the same time. They said the same **** when they made that unfinished, horrible "Sonic the Hedgehog Next-Gen". I have a feeling, after the step forward in Sonic Unleashed, this will be better. That means homing attack AND BEING ABLE TO GO SUPER SONIC on normal stages. They said they are bringing back everything you could do in the old levels so I am heavily anticipating that. I love Sonic and I say fooey to all who think he is fading away.

And Zero I think that "asking for permission" thing is false. I remember reading an interview of Yuji Naka, the former head of Sonic Team, and he was asked about the resemblance to Super Sonic and a Super Saiyan and response was him smiling and saying Akira Toriyama never contacted them about the resemblance (which makes me believe they were influence a bit) http://sonicjam.wikidot.com/aii2005:dec30

Homing attack in a 2D world would be retarded.

Seems like Sega is taking a hint from good ol' MovieBob. Getting rid of most of the terrible cast, great. Rather disappointed they're trying the Megaman Path here.

I'll let MovieBob express the state of things better than I can:

Glanced over the official Sonic 4 forums, someone said that homing attack is already confirmed. Sure hope they don't mess anything else up.

Sonic heroes was terrible, last good sonic game was sonic & knuckles, maybe sonic adventure 2 for Dreamcast.

This might be alright though, as long as they don't balls it up.

The sonic model looks retarded though- he's never looked better than in brawl.

Edit: Looks like the ballsed it up.

I think they made him look like that to give a more classical feel, what with having a big head and a small body.

I love that they are continuing the story from Sonic and Knuckles. My Favorite Sonic design is still Sonic Adventure 2, even the soap shoes were cool (not cooler). Again, I welcome the homing attack. For every time the homing attack glitched up I could name a time where the physics for accelerating in mid air to hit a badnik killed me. While Sonic Hero's story sucked, had stupid ass deaths, and "team rose" was silly, the level design felt very retro and original. It was pretty fun for the most part for me.

I'm excited. Being a gamer that grew up with the old NES and Sega Genesis, I loved side scrollin games. I loved playing the Sonic games on the GBA but had a hard time now and then because of how quickly unexpected crap popped into view with such a small screen. So I'm keepin my fingers crossed for this one.
