What the hell..
I mean.. what's the point of all the viruses? Stupid little loner nerds at home who don't have a life get upset and think they should annoy everyone in the world by making a virus and sending it out. I dont understand, a few years ago, there was so many less viruses and spyware files that you didn't need all of these damn programs to keep your comp safe. Even then, it does nothing. I have Norton Systemworks 2004, fullupdated and still, i found 16 viruses. I dont use kazaa, I don't open those suspicious emails. I only open it from people I know. It doesn't make any sense. I justm ade this thread to ... discuss the integrity of the internet.. which is very low.

Hmm. I dunno dude.

I've been clean on both my PCs for almost 5 years now. Not completely clean--stuff sneaks in now and again--but minimal stuff, really.

Most people don't even know what a virus is. They think any computer problem is a "virus" the same way people get sick. They don't understand the concept.

Spyware is actually all the napster brats' fault. It would have never been invented if people had just let it slide, and used audio-only download services.

Just remember, using those download programs isn't the only way to get viruses. if a friend gives you some bootleg stuff, chances are, he's giving you **** you don't want as well. Plus, if you have XP, Virus/malware type stuff can hide in your system restore backups, reinfecting you after every clean up.

I get what you're saying though, man. It is pretty depressing on the whole, how we have this great and brilliant invention at our fingertips and all we use it for spamming each other's livejournals and stealing music and programs.

It's sad, because most of us internet dudes can handle--barely, sometimes--the influx of BS that chokes our poor computers. But for an average schmuck, man...spyware must be the pits.

I have a friend who doesn't know anything about computers, and she calls me every week to come "fix" the damn thing. I tell her how to stop the **** from coming back but obviously her sorry ass isn't listening to me. And she doesn't even understand WHY these things do what they do.

I told her about the gator thing, for example. I explained that for every computer that **** gets snuck onto, they get paid by several advertisers. She didn't get it. I feel worst for the companies who advertise this stuff themselves...usually they aren't legitimate in the least, but some like the people who try and go through gator are just trying to buy some honest advertising...and really, all that happens is their company name gets associated with an annoying computer program that nobody likes. Their brands get ruined.

When you use kazaa, every banner that flashes by makes that kazaa son of a ***** a buck. Now imagine a minimum of 40 banners per half hour per day that kazaa is on. That's 40x24. That's up to 960 dollars a day going to that rat ****ing *******, from the kazaa folk who leave it on all day to download Lindsay Lohan movies...PER PERSON. Now imagine that ****, multiplied by the better part of a few million people.

That dude gets rich while people use his ****ty program to grab ass other people's stuff. You strangle the economy and you make a ****head richer. And no one seems to mind...as long as they get "what's rightfully theirs."

Kids nowadays with the internet are the worst. They think they're entitled to state of the art software, free dvd rips of movies weeks before they are released, free patches, free games, free everything. There's no other way to say it: the time of the Grabass *****es is upon us.

Sometimes it really amazes me how dumb people are. Especially some of the kazaa folk. You're using a program that is DESIGNED TO STEAL MULTIMEDIA. Did you think it was going to be on the up and up? In all seriousness, I truly believe we might not have had ANY of this stuff on the net if it weren't for Generation Grabass's endless potential for exploitability.

[EDIT: It should be noted that saying "I have Norton blah blah 2006 and I still have viruses" is the same deal as kazaa...if you download Norton System works from some dude on ****ing Bearshare, chances are it's going to be bad for your PC's health. After all...that'd be the first place I'D hide malicious programs]

I use free programs mainly. AVG virus protection, Spybot S&D for spyware, and ZoneAlarm for a firewall. I rarely ever have a problem.
Most people who develop those programs use them themselves, and they certainly don't want their pc infected, so you can rely on them to serve well.

Person A steals software and puts it online.
Person B "shares" stolen software, inturn, stole it aswell.

Try Spy Sweeper and CWShredder, both of which are located in my sig.

EDIT:

As a side note for further spyware protection I know that Mcafee has options to find/protect against some spyware as well.

There are two types of people who put out viruses (excluding people without talent who take others' viruses and spread them)

The first are people who want to make a name for themselves, make a point, or just get their "product" out on the internet to reap havoc on innocent little computers.

The second are people who actually target others' in order to get information. Whether it be credit card numbers, your address, phone number, or even your surfing pattern to see what the consumer likes and dislikes. Why spend thousands of dollars on research when you could send out a virus that logs what sites you visit?

The main reason for so much spyware/adware/virus/trojans is because not many people are on 56k now. So distributing them is a lot faster and easier now. If you get the right programs, and know how to use them correctly, then you'll be good. But if you get programs, and do system scans and think it's over, it's not. Because while you're scanning, the file is still running, and most likley backs itself up after the scan. I have Kazaa Lite, and only use it for downloading music and MUSIC ONLY! so i hardly get any spy/ad-ware/viruses. Just dont leave it open all day. That's like saying "HEY COME GET ME!"

Anywho, I use Norton and it work's for me. There's better programs but i don't have the money for it so i'm kinda stuck with the guy. I have beef with it sometimes when it doesn't want to delete anything, or does a ****ty ass scan and i'd have to go back and search google and delete the files manually. WHICH IS A PAIN IN THE BUTTOCKS! Well, thanks to certain people, i know enough to do what i need. And if taht doestn work out, Formatt Time XD

Well there are your blackhats, whitehats, and greyhats out there (all hacking and coding categories). Bottem line is to watch your back, or your HD more specificly. Don't ever agree to something unless looking over the Agreement. And yes, Kazaa is a bank for viruses, software stealers often download 'Return of the King.exe' out of stupidity for what reason, we do not know, but it happens. Then it spreads, maybe through network, or another idiot downloading the same file, whatever the reason is it's best to think before you double click. It's almost like driving now-a-days I'm afraid.

Most people use these skills because they can. Some do it because they want to test their 'abilities,' we all call them nerds, but most people would use these skills if they had them. The 'greyhats' make worms, the annoyances, like MSBlaster, nothing extremly harmful, but it can be an annoyance unless you get rid of it. The 'whitehats' help people with their 'skills'. And the 'blackhats' do whatever they can to **** you over. That's how my friend categorizes them at least.
