Anyone hear or read about this thing?

Second Life is an Internet-based virtual world which came to international attention via mainstream news media in late 2006 and early 2007. Developed by Linden Research, Inc (commonly referred to as Linden Lab), a downloadable client program enables its users, called "Residents", to interact with each other through motional avatars, providing an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a metaverse. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade items (virtual property) and services from one another.

Second Life is one of several virtual worlds that have been inspired by the cyberpunk literary movement, and particularly by Neal Stephenson's novel Snow Crash. However, Second Life is in a virtual world class of its own. The stated goal of Linden Lab is to create a world like the Metaverse described by Stephenson, a user-defined world of general use in which people can interact, play, do business, and otherwise communicate. Second Life's virtual currency is the Linden Dollar (Linden, or L$) and is exchangeable for US Dollars in a marketplace consisting of residents, Linden Lab and real life companies.

While Second Life is sometimes referred to as a game, this description is disputed. It does not have points, scores, winners or losers, levels, an end-strategy, or most of the other characteristics of games, though it can be thought of as a game on a more basic level. It is a semi-structured virtual environment where characters undertake activities for the purpose of personal enjoyment.

Heard about it. I even downloaded it once, but never got around to installing it. Just kinda lost interest as it sat on my hard drive.

The only way to enjoy second life is to decide on 1 of 2 things.

1) Amazing visual effects with the worst lag imaginable.
2) Bare-minimum visual effects but tolerable lag.

Part of the reason I quit second life is due to its amazing lag. You cant make it look great AND perform well in fps at the same time unless you're in a big empty box in the middle of nowhere, by yourself.

Yeah, i have heard about it. Never really got around downloading it, but the idea of exchangin the game money into real life cash sounded tempting. Nothing else really picked me up...

You know, I tried downloading Red Light Center, but the software is so frickin' glitched. Damn noob programmers. A project like that is practice for the ESF team.

It's pretty old now. Apparently it's really popular, but it's not my thing.
