RTS game question

I'm trying to find a PC RTS game. One of the best and most balanced ones. Online or offline really doesn't matter, but the ability to go online would help. It's a gift for my stepfather since he played Red Alert and really enjoyed it, but eventually got out of it. I was thinking of getting him something new.

Anyone have any ideas?

If he is a red alert kind of guy he'll like C&C3, but it isn't particularly deep. If he likes to crunch numbers Supreme Commander is probably the deepest RTS out there on the market right now. Be warned it's a huge time sink.

Company of Heroes is the best RTS I've played in the past couple of years. Yes, I think it's even better than Supreme Commander (also a good RTS, but as Sonic pointed out, it's a much larger scale).

Throw in Mark of Chaos and he's set for quite some time. If the lore and game-specific stories don't drag him in, the accessible and enjoyable game play will.

Starcraft and Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War. Two most balanced RTS's ever. Only noobs claim it's unbalanced.

Age of Empires II.

If you have an amazing utterly godlike PC, consider getting Supreme Commander.

Otherwise, forever and always, Age of Empires II.

Homeworld if he likes space RTS.

SupCom if he likes Sci-fi RTS and has the rig to run that shizzle.

Otherwise, Company of Heroes.

However, why not let him try Red Alert 2? O:
