What software is good to use for creating 3D models and skinning?
I'd like to get into creating models, and figured I could get a few points in the right direction here.

What can you say about Lightwave?
I think it's better than Milkshape...

I'm pretty sure almost everything is better than Milkshape 3d.

Milkshape is superb in the amount of exporting capabilities, its actually very cheap, but has basic tools, its really a nice tool to start with. In fact many say its a crappy program but you can make really good models with it, I mean look at SV's models.
Anyhow in my opinion Milkshape is the best way to get started with modeling

Professional studios use maya and max for game development, if you are looking to take it seriously start with those. Photoshop is pretty much the only choice for textures.

if you can't afford max, look for Gmax. it's no longer supported but still available, and free.

i use Zbrush and Max in my current studio.

Ive used Milkshape for few years now and dont mind it, but I dont love it either. Fairly straightforward but can easily become a cluster****. I absolutely hate mapping textures for it, esp for heads. (was trying to make a guyver model the other day and almost tore my hair out mapping his face)
Messed around a little with softimage, not sure whether to immerse myself in it or not. Never used any other 3D program except maybe a CAD program at school years ago and SketchUp for some fun.
BTW there are far more paint programs out there than Photoshop =/ Talk about monopolising the marketplace. I prefer Fireworks myself.

What would one recommend as the better programs in terms of

- skinning? (not drawing the skin, but mapping it).

- 'moulding' shapes?

- Is there such a program where one could paint directy on the 'surface' of the model rather than wrap images around it? Like use a brush tool and paint over the model, rotate model, continue painting etc etc

i tend to just use the UVW tools in max for any mapping i need to do, i've never been comfortable using any other software... well, i CAN use other software, i just find max easiest.

Zbrush, or Mudbox would be what you're after there, it's like working with digital clay.

Bodypaint 3d, you will need to have your mesh fully unwrapped, but it's excellent for getting your first base of colour down, and amazing for touching up at the final stages.

ben mathis works almost entirely in bodypaint now, or so i hear.

Myself I have 3dsmax, maya and modo and use them all from time, but for a while now I've been almost exclusively using Silo 2. Its a relatively cheap program coming to around 160$ to buy it. Has great modeling feel some sculpting tools (though not as great as zbrush 3) and in 2.1 the uv mapping is getting a make over making it even better.

The downside of Silo is that it has no built in rendering software, but for me i do that in Max anyways.

3ds Max, Photoshop, Deep UV, a Wacom, and many hours is all you need.
