i use 3ds max 5, works great with me and fairly easy to use if you know what your doing. you could google for a trial version of 3ds max 7, it only lasts 30 days though.

i believe version six is better, mainly because it is a higher number than 5 =o

6 has a few coding updates, as well as the built in plugins for hdr rendering, it also has better uvw mapping tools, and easyer biped/character studio operations.

7 is better than both. too many upgrades with 7 to name =O

For modeling, I think XSI has the best tools I've used thus far. Really really good stuff.

Xsi Softimage

its not free ts quite expensive... but as i remember there is a mod tool wich is free... its for hl2- Because hl2 used XSi softimage to do hl2 models.

i would go for Lightwave 3D....
