It also has a story apparently, which hasn't been communicated by the trailer, but it takes place in the same continuity as Half-Life itself. I've heard the ideas it presents dismissed as ripping off Prey, and if there is a more ignorant statement to be made regarding these two games it has yet to be discovered. Prey's portals aren't user created. What's more, they're used in a completely different way: Prey is a first-person shooter, while Portal is clearly... something else. It's a puzzle game, or an adventure game, or a platformer. You tell me.

You honestly can't blame people for saying it is a ripoff.

Prey just released, harboring a new portal system, then Valve comes out with something called portal out of the blue, whatexactly do you expect?

Oh...my...GOD!!! Is that for PS3 or something??? I can't imagine the rendering required for such a thing! I expected the portals to be just black holes, not real pathways where you can see into the other side!!! A game like this is revolutionary! Incredible!!! If I get the chance, I'm trying this out!

That made me lol.
The Source (Havok) engine was always capable of that...(I think..)

It uses a very similar system to the cameras in Half-Life 2, where you can make an object into a viewport, projecting everything it faces onto the face of another brush. In some cases that would be the lens of a camera showing everything it faces onto the surface of a TV screen. In this, it's Portal A showing everything it faces onto the surface of Portal B.

Whoa, I just discovered that this isn't it's own little game. The "portal" feature (That video) is what's to be implemented into HL2: Episode Two. The game isn't called "Portal" or "Portals", it's really HL2:E2.

God I hope I'm not the only person who didn't know that...

Dude.

It would be fun ****in around with ****.

Like, if you see a bad guy, totally create a portal in the cieling, then create one under the bad guy. As he falls through, quickly make a portal right under the one on the cieling and watch bad guys fall in an infinite loop. Eventually their velocity will increase. Then just take the bottom portal away :>

I'm definately getting this game. and if it IS HL2:EP2, then I'll get number 1.

i had always heard that it was EP2. what i originally heard was that Team fortress 2 would be coming out with EP2(portals).

Anyway that gun will be so fun to play around with, it'd be great if the AI would act confused after randomely falling out of the wall or ceiling.

"Portal" has been confirmed to be set in the Half-Life universe, though may be at some future point. Certain aspects similar to the Half-Life universe can be noted in the official trailer, such as the turrets, which operate and sound exactly like those that the Combine implement, though this may only be due to the use of sounds from Half-Life 2 as placeholders. Also, orbs like those that the Combine use in the Citadel are also seen, with sockets similar to those seen in Half-Life 2: Episode 1, again, potentially placeholders or possibly intentional.
Portal is a new single player game by Valve which is to be released alongside all editions of Episode Two. The game appears to take place within the Half-Life universe, but is less of a FPS than it is a puzzle game based around the use of a gun that opens interconnected portals that the player can use to manipulate the environment and travel through the world. The gameplay appears to be very similar to a indepedently developed freeware game called Narbacular Drop which was released in 2005. Valve subsequently hired its developers.
Sounds like it's a seperate game from Episode 2.

To all saying Portals is Episode Two; are you high? The trailer for Episode 2 has been out since Episode One was released. Alyx, Vortigons, Combine. Not portals.

No, Valve didn't have another security breach (though that wouldn't suprise me), it's a third party addon for Garry's Mod. You can find it here if you're interested.

Hey, I never would have guessed from the "GMod 9.0" text in the top right of the screenshots.

I tried that portal weapon out, its pretty neat but also very buggy, and the one in the real "portal" game, looks much better.
