Every generation struggles to find its voice, and invent its stance on how it plans to run the world when it is its turn. This is why you are currently seeing a progressive/liberal trend towards socialism. The 60s were about the message, now they're trying to run the world that way, and not in the obvious political way. The baby boomers, who where their parents where slightly biased towards southern liberalism or conservatism. They were more straight laced, and wanted cookie cutter for everyone. They rebelled, and now they are your head proffessors, principals, managers, presidents and any other title of importance the baby boomers have let go of. Gen X had its message too, we were sick of being stepped on and wanted to be taken seriously, as adults, without the crap from the top that didn't trust us (the baby boomers hate us Gen X kids). Millenials, which is most of the people on this forum, will find their own message as well, and when its their turn to run the world, they'll act on the message they chose. So besides the obvious cultural impact of the 60s, including social reforms like the civil rights movement (which has been a huuuuuuge impact on how you live now), the 60s counter culture and hippy movements set the tone for how they intended to lead the world when it was their turn.
