Before you all see "Corporate theft" and think ****, this is a Jinx conspiracy thread, it isn't. This is about a bill currently being discussed in congress, If passed this will mean that you would have no rights over your own work unless you pay to protect them.

To be honest, I'm quite frankly shocked and appalled that such a law could even be considered in this day and age. I can't believe something like this could actually happen. To people outside of the US, international Copy right law will not change, but to people within the US, this will give them complete access to all work available unless people pay to be registered with private copy-right companies.

Well, that's some bull**** right there. You want some harrassment (read: expressing your rights and ya know, actually calling congress) I know of quite a few rather liberal talk show hosts that'd be willing to prolly make a quick blurb about this on their shows.

Ed Schultz (http://www.bigeddieradio.com/)
Thom Hartmann (http://www.thomhartmann.com/)
Stephanie Miller (http://www.stephaniemiller.com/home.php?PageId=85&PageSubId=)
Mike Malloy (http://www.mikemalloy.com/)
Richard Green (http://airamerica.com/clout/)
John Elliot (http://www.jonelliottshow.com/)
Bill Press (http://www.billpress.com/)
Rachael Maddow (http://www.rachelmaddow.com/)
Randi Rhodes (http://www.therandirhodesshow.com/)

Also, for those who don't know how to get a hold of their congresspeople/senators, Thom has a website that makes it easy: http://www.thomhartmann.com/congress.shtml

So if you're serious about this, Skiwan, there's a place to start.

ugh... i'm glad i live outside the USA, so that my free thinking remains free.

basically, this allows someone else to steal your ideas, your intelectual properties, unless you can afford to copyright ALL OF THEM. that's not just things you write down, it's any photos you take, any pictures you draw, ANYTHING you create, can be used freely by someone else unless you can pay to call it your own.

this is health insurance for your creations -_-

I knew this would happen.

USA is losing it's freedom little by little all the time, and most people don't even care.
The country will probably have lost it's freedom and civil rights within the next decade, shaping in to a country of people, who will get anything with the right amount of money.

It's sad how money grants you power, but without it you are going to stay as a peon. A peon, who has to kneel to upper power, and keep the society running by doing important jobs which do not even grant much money ( such as working on a construction yard. Without them, there wouldn't even be as advanced buildings for example. There are thousands of jobs, which without the modern society cannot live without and that is one of them ).
Ah well, there goes all the hope for people, who had the potential to really be something in the future.. :E

I really do hope , that this wouldn't get through for the sake of USA's wellbeing.
It's really saddening to see , that people are actually considering this though..

Wow, that's quite a list Karrde.

I linked this youtube vid because It was in a newsletter from www.conceptart.org who are campaigning against it, things like this bill could potentially kill these online communities.

I just cant believe that this could get passed though, I really thought they would understand the implications and changes this would have for the entire art/music industry before congress would even consider it. The Americas arts have always been very rich and strong but this will just make it that much harder for anyone starting out and that isn't tied to a big studio, essentially I think this would cut the legs off an entire generation of people within the creative industries.

I'm pretty politically minded. I just don't like to get into it on the forums since it usually ends up a lot like bashing my head into a brick wall. It's not a lot of fun, it hurts, and everyone thinks you're an idiot for doing it anyway :p

Yall are kind of jumping the gun on the whole "America is taking our freedoms!" thing, you think?

Unless I am mistaken, it just means this bill was brought up, not on the verge of becoming a law. I just can not see this passing though. This literally goes against everything America stands for. The only people that benefit from this are the big guys. I wonder how the bill's sponsor rationalized the effects on the little people.

I wonder if this affects plagiarism? Like, if someone wrote an excellent senior thesis, but did not pay to copyright it, there should be nothing wrong with having thousands of other students copy it for themselves.

The old saying goes, "If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Well, I feel pretty confident that this same logic works in reverse: if something sounds too bad to be true, it probably is. Like Y2k or frigging 2012. Perhaps this wouldn't be quite as grand a scale, but you get what I'm saying. If it sounds ludicrous to us here, it probably sounds just as nutty in DC. It's just as Chakra says, how can you protect against plagiarism if you would have to pay to copyright your midterm essay, or your project for your digital editing class. Oh, you didn't copyright your project? Well sorry, that means I can't do anything about Sam over here, even though it's obvious that he didn't do his school project. Oh, and see Neil over there? Yeah, he pulled an unlicensed documentary off of Youtube, but legally it's legit, so oh well. How about them Cowboys?

Seriously though, the repercussions would bring the media based world to it's knees.

I don't think it matters how it's funded; once it's put to a public vote, no fool is going to be for it.

god you're naive...

it won't ever get to a public vote, it's currently in congress, it's congress who votes.

As well as this obviously damaging the average persons creative output, it'd have an impact in alot more sections of human life, For example, education. This would make doing essays and reports as an american a hell of alot easier.

Copying from peoples work a no-no? not any more! you dont need to spend weeks studying contracting procurement methods, you can simply just glue bits from peoples blogs and wikipedia free-range sources! if you think about it on a broader scale, the impact would be alot of highly-qualified individuals who actually have no real idea of what there "trained" to do, which could have quite a nasty impact on both the economy and educational standards.

Well no, I'm sure schools will still keep rules prohibiting plagiarism. Probably.
