Looks like they're puting up a combined preorder push for the same price as the standard NS2 SE. You can check the individual sites for perks, but briefly...

Alpha access for both games (though NS2 only has alpha editor tools atm)
When NS2 is released, those who perordered get special black armor (kinda like the old constellation icon concept) when the game releases. No effect on gameplay, but just shows who was an early supporter.
Support indie devs. They get something like 99% of the cash for all this.

So c'mon, don't be douche bags :p Support devs who are actually doing something interesting and are notably NOT EA.

I had already pre-ordered Ns2 and now I get a free game. Haven't downloaded the alpha for overgrowth just yet but I'll be sure to do so asap.

And I already preordered Overgrowth so I get NS2 for free. Sweet, although I think their kind of screwing themselves over. I probably would have bought NS2 when it released.

They need the money for development though, Sub. They're using a new finance model to a great extent.

Didn't Unknown Worlds get like 2 million in investment money for development?

totally snapped this up. both games were brilliant fun back in the days and we can't do enough these days to encourage productive indie game development!

Bleh I dunno, NS never really appealed to me. I remember playing it the day it came out, but I got bored of it quickly. Gotta think about it :S

That was the first stage, before prerordering. They got tons of cash from preorders alone. I personally love this model as it helps indy companies with capital, and it helps games release with a ready made fan community. If you do it this way, you can circumvent traditional publishing needs as you get a few groups like Valve and Stardock (Impulse) and a **** ton of word of mouthh, free advertising.
