If you apply the null texture to a face would Valve Hammer still count that face as a... face? Also I heard there are some problems with using the null texture (unfortunately these problems weren't stated). Anyone care to elaborate?

I think they don't really nullify those faces when you apply a null texture. I always set the faces I can't see to null and set the scales of those faces 100 x 100, this greatly increases the performance of a map.

Then why are my r speeds lower with the scales up then with the scales at normal ? Either I'm a retard or it does something.

LOL, I don;t think you're retarded, I'm gonna test this theory now ;)
Oh and MC, a good way, even though it takes a while sometimes, to apply null texture is to select all of your brushes(under options>select all.

Then you click on the texture toolbar and deselect all the faces that you'll see ingame, then you aplly the null texture to the remaining faces, and there it is!
