Only the Narrator calls them 'Earth's Special Forces'. Then again, I think he's the only one that calls them 'The Z Fighters' as well.

Actually it is Z as in Zeplin because Toriyama was a big Led Zeplin fan as a young fung chow.

DragonBall Z = Z-Fighter's = Zeplin Fighter's

The Creator only looked form an diff. name to show people that Dragonball was getting to be a lil diff. so he just took Z to show that DB and DB"Z" ,are 2 diff. pairs of shoes.

I heard the Z stands for Zeny, the currency in an MMORPG called Ragnarok Online, because Toriyama is a big fan of that game.

its the currency of dbz too. at the tournement at the start of the buu saga trunks and goten try to enter the adult competition by dressing up, trunks tells goten that the prize is 1000(?) zenny

In the japanese episodes they say Dragonball Zeto. Dunno what zeto means. Maybe it's the way the pronounce 'Z'.
