"Predicting" as in taking a guess?

I was looking at the stars last night, and I found a weird pattern, so I confirmed that a huge asteroid is going to collide with Mars tomorrow night.

That's how ridiculous that sounds. :p

Still though, if it does happen, imagine the chaos. We are relying so heavily on electricity, the internet and our telephones. It would be a massive disaster.

Eh, that's true, but eventually we'll learn to adapt, just like we've learned to adapt to electricity.

I think the only people endangered physically by this are the ISS astronauts. Everyone else should be fine, but our technology infrastructure might take a huge hit.

Eventually, yeah. But the chaos, people will start pillaging the supermarkets for food, since their fridges will have shut off and everything will start to rot. Getting fresh water for us in developed countries would become very difficult. Cars will probably cease to work as well. The scope of the disaster would be...unimaginable. Many people would probably die. Think about hospitals, even though they probably have generators, they too will eventually run out of fuel (if they are not fried by the Solar blast). And all those people with pacemakers.

Will it even effect systems that are completely shut down, loose from power?

If that happens then i'll go to some rural areas and grow my own food. I'd also take a gun with me.

If people are going to panic and start freaking out, theres no doubting people might start robbing houses, people, stores, ect., so having a firearm might come in handy if the **** hits the fan. You never know.... but Ill be ready when/if that time comes.
I have a feeling this solar storm is going to hit out technological infrastructure pretty hard, as Cucumba said.

Now, space is not my forte, so I have a question. If we get hit by a solar burst and it distorts Earth's magnetic field, would it revert back it its original "flow"? (for lack of a better word)

Well, yeah, it does. If it didn't then we'd be toast.

You know, despite what I said in my previous posts, I have a feeling that in the long run, as hippy as this sounds, this will probably be good for the Earth. We rely too much on technology and we seem to be using a lot of resources from Earth to power our technology :p

Make sure they don't have any residual charge, and it should be fine. Powering down the entire earth would be a good way to stop this, however fat chance of that happening.
Also, even though this will probably happen, I'm just getting the whole 2k hype feel from it.

If completely free of any electrical charge, they might be saved. But still, if the entire electricity network is down, what's the use?

I do somewhat agree with you. Though...no more porn movies...

They don't know exactly when it will happen though. So it's pretty hard to power down the entire earth. Plus the fact that a couple of countries would probably get paranoid saying that if they turn of their missile defenses, they might get attacked by terrorists.

If that was safe information, the media would not shut up for a second. That's BS imo. For those who believe in it, buy some solar and photovoltaic panels, someelectric controllers and some batteries, and there ya go. No need for magnetic materials to produce energy. The most recent photovoltaic panels have 50% efficency, that's 20% more power than a fuel generator can produce. Noo need to panic xD.

/facepalm

There are so many things wrong with this stupid article. How to even begin... First, they're using weasel words, which I hate. Glenn Beck does the same thing, which is why I hate him.

NASA said that a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery".
Notice they don't tell you which report. I'd really like to read that report. They go on to say it could cause "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damage ..." but they're prefacing it with their own words. You don't get to put it into context as you would by reading the report. There's no context in any of the article, nothing is backed up with citations, and almost none of it is based on any real science. This article is a complete joke and I feel sorry for anyone who believes a shred of it.

Also worth pointing out is that the last solar maximum was in 2000, and the next solar maximum isn't until May 2013. It's predicted to be one of the weakest cycles since 1928. - NASA

May of 2013 is not 2012. I hate India as of this moment.

Right. I remember reading about the the concerns of a strong solar flare striking the Earth. Everyone under the atmosphere will not be physically affected and would pose the greatest threat to astronauts, like Cuc said. The solar storm is not going to wipe out every electronic on earth because our atmosphere protects us from the charged particles. However our satellites are exposed and make are technology based infrastructure vulnerable. But I also remember reading that temporarily shutting the certain satellites down will lessen the blow of the storm.

And what's this about "Humans going back to simpler times"? Our entire race is famous/infamous on using technology, whether it be a supercomputer or a sharpened stick. You take our technology away and we go backwards. Just because we were capable of doing it at one point does not mean we should go back. What I would like though is to develop some kind of technology that can't be wiped out by an EMP blast...But then fire also kills everything so there you go. At least data can be transferred to other areas faster than making copies of crates of documents.

Man, and here I was hoping that whole 2012 thing would be a zombie apocalypse.

I want my goddamn zombie apocalypse!
