What's the value of a song? Jammie Thomas-Rasset has spent the last few years in court debating that question. The Minnesota mother of four is being penalized for illegally downloading and sharing 24 songs on the peer-to-peer file-sharing network Kazaa in 2006, but how much she owes the record labels has been in question. The jury in her third trial has just ruled that Thomas-Rasset should pay Capitol Records $1.5 million, CNET reports, which breaks down to $62,500 per song. It's a heavy penalty considering the 24 tunes would only cost approximately $24 on iTunes, which was Thomas-Rasset' argument, too.
Wow, really? Just toss her a 100$ fine + 24$ for the Songs. Estimates show she could break into a music store, steal hundreds of CD's, burn the place down, and it'd have cost her less in court.

They honestly expect someone who has to steal their music to pay them $1.5 million?

It's irritating though. Nothing he's posted has been even remotely interesting or new.

We saw this story a thousand times in the late '90s. The MPAA and RIAA are tools, we get it. The more attention we bring to their bull****, the better we're helping them to do their jobs, which is to strike fear in the hearts of single mothers working hard to feed their kids. If she wants to come home at the end of the day and listen to some music without allocating funds that could otherwise be put toward her children's well-being, I think that's more than fair.

Just stop. Please.

What pisses me off mostly about RIAA and MPAA is that they play bigshot, while the artists who actually made the music they are selling get next to nothing out of it.

Hell people have to pay those damn companies to "Protect the rights to their intellectual property" even if they are playing their own songs. I mean seriously. Thats corruption at its worst.

Am sorry if i am offtopic but most of the "news" Mkil posts i'd have never known about, even if most of them are... uninteresting. I just look at the posts and move on, it helps the forums stay... eventful.

It takes more effort to complain about them then just glancing over them. Just saying.

If you don't like his threads, don't read them. It's a pretty simple concept.

Anyway the point of the 1.5mil fine is as the article states, to set an example so people stop doing it, which is a fair strategy by the record company. Unfortunately though, they're just garnering sympathy for this woman and making the world hate them just that little bit more.

Sucks to be her, but if you get caught, you better be prepared that there will be some consequences.

They tried this and failed 10 years ago. This does nothing to deter music piracy, especially among the youth of today where kids swap songs like they swap greetings. All they've done is ruin the life of a single mother.

MINNEAPOLIS — A Minnesota woman ordered to pay a recording industry trade group $1.5 million for illegally sharing music online doesn't plan to pay those damages as her attorneys continue to argue the amount is unconstitutional, she said Thursday.

A federal jury found Wednesday that Jammie Thomas-Rasset, of Brainerd, must pay $62,500 per song — for a total of $1.5 million — for illegally violating copyrights on 24 songs. This was the third jury to consider damages in her case, and each has found that she must pay — though different amounts.

Duckworth said if the case is appealed, the RIAA is ready to defend the constitutionality of the verdict. She said the issue is still important, even after all this time.

"People forget about all of the individuals who work really hard to make music for a living," she said. "These people are negatively impacted whenever music is stolen and distributed to millions of people."
This coming from a company that gets payed every time those hard working individuals want to play their songs live and fines them for not paying. Thats hypocrisy at its best.

Not for anything, but people were *****ing when he didn't supply his own arguments to the post. He's now doing that. I see nothing wrong with what he's doing. He's essentially using the forum as a blog to share events that are important to him, that he feels are important to be discussed. When we implemented the respect rule, you people jumped on us for being thought police. Well here's a chance for you to not be hypocrites.

Besides, if we all posted what Dam wanted to talk about there would be way to many posts about goat porn.
