I re-ran the update unfortunately, it's still providing the same error. I believe I've read similar suggestions however they were coming from server admins primarily running the mod from a windows machine.

Posted 11/11/08 9:59pm I've been told that if you update the HLDS linux tool first, then update hlds itself, with the appid file in place as I have done, this may fix the problem, if you could try this, I would greatly appreciate it.

At this time, there isn't much we can do for you. The update did break a lot of things and unfortunately ESF was one of them. There's a thread on the ESF forums about the issue which can be read here:

It's very likely the esf developers would have to patch their installation before your ESF server can be brought back online.

Posted 10/23/08 8:13pm Hello gregory surace,
We apologize for the inconvenience. Valve issued a steam update to all hl1/1.6
based games today. In order to issue an update to your hl1 based server, you
simply need to restart it. The update will be automatically applied.
That being said, the update is causing some issues for clients including
crashing upon joining a server. Unfortunately, this looks to be a bug
introduced by the steam update. As it is an update related issue, Valve may
need to make a correction before clients having difficulty can join the server
in question.
Additionally, after the update, server queries through tools like HLSW are are
reporting hl1 based games as running on the source engine. This too, is a
product of the recent update.
If you have any questions or comments, please let us know.
