I'm confused about lights, I know i'm supposed to use the 'light' entity for point-based lighting, but what if I want general lighting that covers the whole map, like esf_arrival? Light from the skybox. I tried a light_spot and set the 'Is Sky' flag to yes, but the models (player and env) appear jet black.

Any help would be appreciated,

Does it matter where I place it in the map?

the entities settings are what matters (direction and brightness)

Apparently it works nice if you put it half in the skybox brush.
Might be wrong though..

Yeah, what raeku said, just put it in 3d view BUT if you want the whole map to be pretty light, compile without .rad, that's lighting, so then it will look like in hammer, with no shadows though.

Oh and ready, about what you said, brightness, how bright should it be if I want to make a brightish map, I can't explain how bright though, like for a map at the beach for example?
