Ok this is a thread where I plan to "Mod bash" or critique every HL2 mod that has a plubic beta/alpha release or is completely released.
It seems that HL2 mods are coming out like flies and either I have to swat them down or build them up.
This is diffrent forom the minimods page because I plan to use all conversions of HL2 on this. And, I am also critiquing the diffrent mods based on what I have seen.
I will go in order of most reciently updated as of March 14, 2005. As mods are released, I will bash them. If they are updated I will edit the post with the mod in it and post a post saing that mod whatever was updated (and tell you which post it was). At the end of every bash I will give you links to thier website and the MODdb page.

I think this mod is usless because I don't believe that many of those developers have put much time into it unlike Sven Co-op will.

All it does is if you have like 1 bullet missing in your ammo, you only pick up one bullet. Or if your missing 2 health you wont pick up a 25 healt kit to heal you.

Mod: Half-Life 2 Capture The Flag

This was the second mod that I found that was good. This mod starts you out on a battle field where you attack the enemies flag and grab it to return it to your flag. Standard CTF mode stuff. I find that the servers, however, are often laged (As is in most new mods). However I believe that the mappers should get more creative with the maps and the mod maker should start tring to add his own weapons to make it really fun.

This mod is a verry good mod of the standard CTF flag feel.
You start out with tons of physics models on the map and you try to throw them in your base as fast as you can, but watch out. There will be people coming into your base to try to steal your objects. Hit them with an object or a crowbar and get your items back into your base before the time limit is up.
Or you could start out with tons of "smashable" items in your base and defend from people smashing those items. At the same time try to invade and smash thiers. I bet you will find it hard.

Dont worry about what you see. THIS MOD IS FOR HL2. Its just the beta is for Half-Life.
You start out with your favorate Mech characters from several diffrent mech series, and you battle it out either in a FFA or Team Battle. The weapons system is verry origional and complete. The only thing I have to bash about it is the fact that the melee lands blows half of the time.
The HL2 version will be quite diffrent, however. You start out in a hanger, choose your mech and attack. But that isn't it. You could invade as a human and get some unknown bonuses for "hacking" the base. You could also choose the path of a builder and help defend the base and many other things. As far as I can tell there is not that much advantage in choosing one of the 2 teams, but there are diffrences. As for what the whole mod will be, we will just have to wait and see.

This was my first HL2 mod and quite frankly my favorite.
You start out by spawning ANYTHING you want. You could spawn rag dolls or even live people. Make funny scenes. Build ramps. Have jet packs. Make swings. place balones. Have physics go whild. You can do pretty much ANYTHIING on this mod and poke fun at the HL2 physics and ragdoll system.
The only thing you can't do is beat up other people. Mainly because this mod is meant only for fun.

I have been waiting to tell people about this one for a long time. This mod is my second favorite. You start out at your spawn. You get your building materials which consist of any physics object around.
Things like blocks, panels, and even milk bottles are used in the construction of your base. You grab them and set them up to defend your flag. (personally I am a master of death traps, which means they can grab the flag, but will find it hard pressed to get out of the onslaught of allies grenading them or shooting them). You can build bunkers, death traps, and many more ingenious ways of defending your base.
After you build, you start your attack. You rush thier base and try not to get shot. Once your in thier base you duck and evade thier attacks to find thier flag and bring it to you.
If you gain enough points (kills) you can buy better weapons only for that round. Afterwards you will have to rebuy them.
Also, if you get this mod, be shure to get the map pack on the webstie. It contains maps that are verry good for this version of CTF.
Update:
Personally I like the new 1.4 building system. Cause now you can auctally destroy thier bunkers therefor making not all bunkers indestructable. And all bunkers will be penetrable.

As for the most recient update, it doesnt have much, except: THE CRASH BUGS ARE FIXED. And I also read that version 2.0 will have better less laggy game play. w00t.

All this does is remake the weapons that never made it into HL2 story. Things like the Tau Cannon, flare gun, and stikie gun. Besides that there is nothing new. When I played this mod, I kept finding a wierd bug where it would delete the weapons that the solders droped with a crowbar. So I had to cheat in order to get the weapons. Afterwards I just didnt find having a tau cannon fun.
Update
It seems that I have forgotten several things you could have done with this that I wish I origonally found. You can pioliot striders, manhacks, several diffrent vhiecles. You can do some other things that I haven't found yet. Stay tuned.

Well this mod is supposed to be a mod where you get points for skill. You have weapons from a tooth pick and katana, to a rail gun and a phase cannon.
The idea is you get more skill for the weaker the weapon. If you kill with a toothpick, you get 100 kills where as a rail gun would probally only get you 1 or 2. The kills are used with your call for ammo gun where you get ammo at the cost of a kill. Also if you die, you loose a kill.
The mod maker should have spent more time getting new weapon models and new vgui weapons.

OMG. Talk about a must needed thing for half-life2. The mod needs work because It doesnt save your ammo and stuff, but frankly from what I have seen I dont care.
This is a mod for the origional HL2 story line. You start out on the train and immediately you notice that everything is diffrent. You see the city guards beating up excaped alien slaves. After the comotion is over you see that gate that you USED to walk through all the time on this story line. Well it was blocked by a city guard. I had to grab the suitcases and build a way for me to climb over the fence.
Later on when you reach open spaces you notice a war going on between head crabs and combine. This is your distraction befor you meet alyx when you are beat up.
There is new model skins and everything. Example:Gman has a beard (must see), and the scanners have new skins.
Anyhoo when you are auctally battleing, you have to aim. You cant simply "generally aim" at the people and have them dead. Aim for the head or you are dead in this mod.
There are TONS of more enemies spawned across thiese maps. And if you cant find cover they will kill you.
Also this mod has successfully put the scare that I think the HL2 developers were trying to incorporate. The city feels like its under attack, and everything is out to get you. Even the weapons are upgraded. And the mod maker added a "bullet time mode" where it takes away from your power just like sprinting would.
Let me give you a hint. I beat HL2 storyline the second day it was out on hard mode and probally died 2 times. On this story, I found it EXTREMELY hard to get past the water area just past station 12 (where the barrels are set on fire and are dumped into the water). That was hard mode.
I cant wait until I get to try "Italian Extreme Mode" skill.
The mod maker even updated some of the sounds. I almost laughed at what the city guard said (the one that drops then can and asks you to put it away). Even the splash screen before starting hte game is fun. This mod maker captured the HL2 life the way it SHOULD be.
Update:
HOLY CRAP, This will take a while. New itialian extreme mode. Theres new Single Player campains. ETC. Man oh man I am jittering in my seat just thinking of it. Well, time to start.

I would like to nick name this mod a vhiecle mod. What you do is you are spawned in the map and then you move around trying to find a strider or helecopter or dunebuggy etc. Before you are blown to bits by any of them
Also when you are in one of these you can use thier weapons that came with them. You can use all the striders attacks and the helecopters attacks. etc.etc.etc. Fun mod if you would like to play as a giant strider stabing every person that you come into sight.

Simple concept that could go further. You start out with A giant ball in the map. You use your grav gun, sub machine gun, pistols, and any other HL weapon to force the ball into the enemy goal. But watchout, you can be killed while doing it.
In the end, this mod only seems to be a deathmatch game with a rolling ball. The mod maker should make more of an incentive to hit the ball more than the players, but it is just the way the mod seems to be developing.

This mod focuses on teamwork to play the game. It starts out in a CS way where people would buy thier weapons, then it sets you free. However, this is diffrent. Most of the time people would just kill everything, but not for this game. In this one, the main ideas is to follow through on your objectives. If you don't, most likely you will cause the death of your team. Learn to balance attack and defence, and you will do well with this mod.
An other thing that I thought was intresting with this mod, was classes. Each class has its own pluses and minsues. So you have to know how your character works. Also there is levels. You gain experience for your character. I really cant tell much of a diffrence only cause I got to a level 4, but I did notice my aim getting beter with every level

Also this mod has successfully put the scare that I think the HL2 developers were trying to incorporate. The city feels like its under attack, and everything is out to get you. Even the weapons are upgraded. And the mod maker added a "bullet time mode" where it takes away from your power just like sprinting would.
Let me give you a hint. I beat HL2 storyline the second day it was out on hard mode and probally died 2 times. On this story, I found it EXTREMELY hard to get past the water area just past station 12 (where the barrels are set on fire and are dumped into the water). That was hard mode.
I cant wait until I get to try "Italian Extreme Mode" skill.
The mod maker even updated some of the sounds. I almost laughed at what the city guard said (the one that drops then can and asks you to put it away). Even the splash screen before starting hte game is fun. This mod maker captured the HL2 life the way it SHOULD be.

HOLY CRAP, This will take a while. New itialian extreme mode. Theres new Single Player campains. ETC. Man oh man I am jittering in my seat just thinking of it. Well, time to start.

I would like to nick name this mod a vhiecle mod. What you do is you are spawned in the map and then you move around trying to find a strider or helecopter or dunebuggy etc. Before you are blown to bits by any of them
Also when you are in one of these you can use thier weapons that came with them. You can use all the striders attacks and the helecopters attacks. etc.etc.etc. Fun mod if you would like to play as a giant strider stabing every person that you come into sight.

Simple concept that could go further. You start out with A giant ball in the map. You use your grav gun, sub machine gun, pistols, and any other HL weapon to force the ball into the enemy goal. But watchout, you can be killed while doing it.
In the end, this mod only seems to be a deathmatch game with a rolling ball. The mod maker should make more of an incentive to hit the ball more than the players, but it is just the way the mod seems to be developing.

This mod focuses on teamwork to play the game. It starts out in a CS way where people would buy thier weapons, then it sets you free. However, this is diffrent. Most of the time people would just kill everything, but not for this game. In this one, the main ideas is to follow through on your objectives. If you don't, most likely you will cause the death of your team. Learn to balance attack and defence, and you will do well with this mod.
An other thing that I thought was intresting with this mod, was classes. Each class has its own pluses and minsues. So you have to know how your character works. Also there is levels. You gain experience for your character. I really cant tell much of a diffrence only cause I got to a level 4, but I did notice my aim getting beter with every level
