I dunno if any of you have heard about it yet, but Microsoft have launched a new search engine www.bing.com to try to rival google, they claim it is more accurate and allows more options than google.

I'm somewhat skeptical, I think google is still better for conventional searches, but the video and image searching on bing seems a lot more accurate, less random images and also allows you to "see similar" and also keeps a bar to the side when you click to view something. The video search is really quick and it'll stream the vid in the thumbnail if you hover it.

The big problem I found with it, is I have to change my location options if I want decent results, about 50% of all the links I search while set in "united kingdom" come up with french pages or other european languages, if I want any decent results I have to set it to United States English.

This was on the news last night, apparently Bing was the best they could come up with, since they're hoping to attain "verb" status as google has. Apparently they're starting a multi million dollar TV advertisement campaign soon too, so be prepared for none-relevant commercials all over the TV.

That's.. quite interesting if you ask me. But I never really liked microsoft's search engine such as live. I hope Bing gives a better result than live search.

I actually like it, but that name does indeed suck.

I just looked at the video:
http://www.decisionengine.com/Default.html

Oddly enough, I don't have the option to search through shops, etc. When I click on shops on the home page, it brings me to another sale site. When I search for something like a Digital Camera through bing, all it brings up some sites.. But nothing like the video shows of models and prices.

I skipped about halfway through the video, heard the line "It's not just a search engine, it's a decision maker", xed off immediately. Marketing is trying too hard.

Trying to go against something like google is a pretty big challenge...I guess we can not monopolize search engines, but I really do not find myself changing from google, unless there is a certain audio/video search engine. I am curious if the image search is better because even google messes that up dramatically.

And the centered result links irritates me. I associate that with the kind of webpages where they take a iteration of a domain name and provide you with advertising links that have to do with the intended website.

I hate the name too, but its so bad, it does stick in your mind.

I must say that the "Decision maker" thing is a double edged sword, I hate the fact that I know it may be omitting results that actually might be exactly what I'm looking for, but on the other hand I can spend a long time on google having to scan through totally irrelevant searches. I'm not sure what to make of it tbh.

I remember about 10 years ago, when there was some competition out there against google, a lot of different searching engines which brung different kind of results. It seemed as google grew bigger and better those competition disappeared, I cant even remember what I used to use now. I'm kinda thinking both engines have their uses atm, I much prefer bing for searching for images, google I can go through 50 pages of totally irrelevant results where as with bing the percentage of randoms is much much lower. I spend a lot of time gathering references, and this seems to be quite nice for that purpose.

first word I tried with the image search was "porn" and I got this:

The search porn may return explicit adult content.
To get results, change your search terms.

If there is no option to disable filtering. I'll never visit them again

mind telling me where that option is, cuz it's not in my preferences tab
I typed 'porn' into the imagens section, then the website told me that it may content adult material and, right below that mensagem you can see a link to deactivate the parent filter.

I don't get that link. It just asks me to change my search term

Bing hates Germany. :p Still, like said, can't see myself changing to 'Bing' just for the sake of some easier video searching. Google is clean, fast and simple; just the way I like it. Don't fix what's not broken.

Well, bing is beta. But I like the fact that bing has a lot of features and options for both links and images.
