Ed Vaizey, the communications minister, has called a meeting with the country’s biggest broadband providers, including BT, Virgin Media and TalkTalk, to explore changing how pornography gets into homes.

Instead of using parental controls to stop access to explicit websites, the tap will be turned off at source, meaning adults will have to ask to receive the images.

The move is designed to prevent children from being exposed to sex at an early age and follows warnings about the hidden impact of pornography.

It comes in advance of the introduction of new technology that will enable the internet to be watched through television sets.

Mr Vaizey told the Sunday Times: “This is a very serious matter. I think it is very important that it’s the ISPs (internet service providers) that come up with solutions to protect children.”
I don't know how they plan to do this; I mean with sites like google...or well, just about any site...they can't possibly block all this ****.

I guess it's time to start saving what you can.

not a chance it would cause a massive uproar in the fact we pay for the internet so by blocking stuff they are in breach of a contract you the customer have with the ISP

This is just wrong on so many levels. A few:

- Who would decide what site/content/material is considered porn?
- If a site (a forum for instance) has one single pic with.... let's say a topless chick, do you block the whole site?
- Can you imagine a regular subscriber entering their ISP-shop: "Ummm...hi...so who do I speak to to get porn on the internet?"
- They would probably use this as an excuse to globally raise the subscription cost under "augmented administrative costs" or something like that.
- And probably the worst of all: You can change the content of a website in a matter of clicks, but imagine the time, effort and bureaucracy to get the status of you site changed...

So yeah, I get the point of protecting children, but this is just another case of "too old, too conservative and too dumb" for their own good. I wonder if these folks ever really think these ideas through, or if they just share every idea they have thinking it's gold....

The internet is supposed to be free to access for everyone (save for paid services), it shouldn't be allowed for anyone to block any content. Next thing they might do is secretly adding in some blocking for sites like Wikileaks.

Besides....the hidden impact of porn? What?

I think they mean the sound your jizz makes when it hits your desk. You know, the sound of shame and that lingering thought "Why'd I have to do that?". That sound.

When it's out on your desk, it's hardly hidden anymore, eh?

That's after the impact though. It's the equivalent of a stealth bomber. You don't see it until it drops its bombs.

Seems like this has become old news, suddenly they say that it can't be done...
