Why does it say on the forum that ESF can't work with Counter-Strike, when it can, it's just not legal to run it like that? I mean, I get that you guys are anti-piracy, but why deny that it exists? Why not just not support it?

So people won't come on here and ask us how to get ESF to work with 1.6.

So we dont get an order to stop producing the mod, so that we can continue to host the site and the forums, so that we as an official group dont get in trouble with the law.

Besides HL1 is dirt cheap these days. So we support HL1 on STEAM only. You are welcome to stay in the community regardless of what you are using, just dont expect to get any game related help if you run into problems with anything if you dont use the legit version of HL1.

Its as simple as that.

When people ask us if it runs with Counter Strike, we assume they are talking about a legit Counter-Strike off STEAM, not some pirated Counter-Strike. ESF does not run on a legit Counter Strike.

Hm, haven't thought of that, that pretty much answers my question, I guess.

But still, in my honest opinion (which I will not argue), ESF should have nothing to do with any corporation like Valve, as I'm sure that a lot of people have poured money into their pockets, just so they can play ESF online. I think the game should be a standalone. Let's face it, there aren't that many good mods for HL1, but ESF has simply taken it to the new level. Watching those ingame clips on YouTube, I can't believe how much progress the game has made since 1.2. It basically looks nothing like HL1 anymore, just uses its engine. And best of all, it's free. Not because I can't cough up $9.95, as I've done, to play the game, but because the team is doing it out of the shear love of doing it, with no thought of profit whatsoever. In many ways, they've accomplished more than Valve, a simple game manufacturer, ever will. Respect!

It can't become stand alone. And no, Valve does alot, you're really blowing smoke up their asses now. ESF is amazing, and a ton of work has been done. Do they deserve compensation for their work? Yes, I think they do as well, but they cannot, as it is a licensed IP, and the Engine is Valves. They cannot release it stand alone, without legal issues, or tons of cash.

Valve was and still is one of the groundbreaking developers that put gaming on the chart on a whole different chapter.
If you say that the ESF team has done more with its HL1 engine than valve did i agree to a degree. HL2 was revolutionairy as well

Source is Goldsrc, they just upgraded it, much like the ESF & Cry of Fear team is doing...so they've done much more with Gldsrc, or Quake II, or whatever you wanna call it.

There are also things beyond the ESF team and Valve's control. When you want to bring out a game stand alone, not only does the ESF team need a license to use the GoldSrc engine, they would also need a license to use any licensed material. Ie. anything that has to do with DBZ. Now...how much money did you say you have on your bank account to finance that..?

There is also the Team themselves, they most likely want to finish 1.3 off and be done with it, but hey, I'm not the Team, but I can't imagine they'd wanna go retail with all the costs involved, and tons, and tons of work. As this is a semi-casual work thing.

I thought that, if they aren't making money (which they aren't) licensed material, that they can freely use any of it? I mean, if it was stand alone, how would it be different from, say, some DBZ M.U.G.E.N. out there? Then again, that GoldSrc engine thing is something I haven't heard of yet, so I don't know what that is about, but the point I was making was that the team has already done so much, is responsible for hundreds of dollars in Valve's pockets, if I was Valve, I'd simply let them HAVE the engine of their 13 year-old game that almost no one even plays anymore, because, to be honest, the team is doing things with it Valve could/would never do.

On a side note, there was, or still is, a crappy version of Bid For Power (that old Quake III mod that had legal issues for using DBZ characters and trying to make money off of it) done with DBZ characters, it's as far as I know stand alone, and I seriously doubt anyone paid real money for that, instead of just making it a Quake mod, like up until that moment. ZEQ2 is also stand alone, isn't it?

Id released the source code to their engine, Valve didn't. Thus the only access the team will have will be to the modding tools.

They have achieved what they have by hacking in secondary engines, but thats about all they'll be able to do with Goldsrc.

And thousands still play HL1 & it's mods...so yeah.

And those mods are stand alone because of what Z-Power said.

They would have to re-write a great deal of content and still wouldn't be able to sell. 1.3 will be the last version, a few bug fixes, and then that is that, The Team has worked long & hard enough. Give them rest.

Counter-Strike started out as a mod, Team Fortress Classic, The Specialists, Mech Mod, and many more HL1 mods were great in their time. HL1 has just slowly died out. I mean it is around 13 to 14 years old.

ESF has never worked with CS. If you have non-Steam CS and installed ESF to that folder, your non-Steam CS probably has the required HL files to run HL mods. Basically you could delete the CS but leave HL files and ESF would still work.

The very best there is.

You could argue this is fair use, but this probably wouldn't help them anyway. It's simple, really: When the coypright holder sends them a C&D, the mod is finished. A legal confrontation is risky and way too expensive for any modding project.

"Great in their time"? You make it sound like mods today are better.. I still haven't found a mod that is "The Specialists" on Source.. let alone better then it, same goes for TFC (really dislike the direction they went with TF2) and DoD. Lets not forget mods like Hostile Intent.. 2 of these 4 have Source versions that.. frankly (atleast when released) were not even half as good as the HL1 mod, as for TS and HI.. they don't have anything like them on Source, or moded for any other engine out there... That being said, would be nice if they ever released "Hostile Intent: Phoenix Rising". Would play the ever-living out of that untill ESF:F came out.

Side note, those are my opinions, not facts lol.
