Recently this thread was closed. Supposedly threads about drugs are not allowed. However, there is strangely nothing about this in the rules or AUP.
The topic starter read an article which he found interesting, so he posted a link to the article here and possibly hoped to get a discussion thread going.
Contents of the opening post consisted of nothing but a URL which refers to a legal article about an illegal substance. Judging from the article, by law, it's not illegal to discuss this subject. The rest of the topic was people attempting to funnily reply to it.

I can somewhat understand the moderators, in my opinion, faulty reasoning to "shield" younger users from this subject, which was the reasoning used in previous marijuana related posts and what was supposedly referred too, but which is a method I personally do not agree with, as I believe that withholding information about this subject, or treating it specially, only makes it more appealing. (Which is funny, because it's really just a harmless herb compared to certain legal toxins that are allowed by law, but that's another discussion.) We all know that as kids, when parents said no, it was only more incentive to somehow do it.

Anyway, I said somewhat because other threads about this subject have been allowed. Ruling on this subject in the past 2+ years has been unpredictable to say the least. But from what I can tell, this is the third closed thread regarding this specific subject, but by far the least harmful. In my nearly 10 years here, we have discussed a lot of illegal matters, some way worse then others and most definitely way worse then this, yet those were, for some reason, allowed. a recent example of that is this thread.
Now in this pedophile thread, a link is given to an easily purchasable book which tells you how to get away, or diminish charges about an extremely touchy subject, especially in the last few years. The article of the closed thread however has no information about how to obtain it, as a matter of fact it makes it very clear that it's an illegal substance. Somehow though, it was deemed more harmful to the population of this forum then a book that teaches you how to be a better pedophile.

My questions are, why are we not allowed to discuss such things? how does discussion this cause anything "bad" or "harmful"? When was withholding or censoring information ever the good solution? Why is this specific subject not allowed, but other illegal stuff is, and why is the supposed ruling on the topic so half-assedly done?

I do kinda get why topics like warez and other illegal internet "stuff" are not allowed, those topics share the same "realm" of existence as this forum. However drugs do not, and as long as people are not selling it here, I do not see why people should not be allowed to discuss the matter.

To play devils advocate:

Forum Rules said:
Adult Content:
Topics, posts, and links to inappropriate or adult material (such as pornography and hentai) will not be tolerated.
Depending on the definition of "Adult Content" it is part of the rules that discussion on such topics are not tolerated.

AUP said:
Inappropriate Content
Because of the turbulent political climate in the world today, we are no longer allowing topics on the subject of war on the forum. It has been noticed that every single thread of that nature leads only to heated tempers and loud disagreement. Read the forum stickies to see any additional censored content.
This one does specifically mention the subject of war, but the title of "Inappropriate Content" could also apply to drugs.

---

All that said, I do agree with you, in that harmless discussion on said topics should not be censored. While yes, there are minors that frequent the forum, a good number of us are old enough and mature enough to hold intelligent discussion on controversial subjects. There has been a number of threads in recent memory that, while the discussion was heated, those that participated maintained their cool and there was some interesting points brought up for either side.

Examples include:

Mosque at ground zero
Black chick knocked out by the cop
Aforementioned guide to being a pedo

I think the way around this is to allow these threads but just have the mods closely monitor the discussion and if it gets out of hand, either issue warnings or close the thread.

I don't make the rules man! As I said, I think the community as a whole is mature enough to handle the discussion.

We should get an 18+ place for stuff outside of the normal rules such as things that started this topic. It would get rid of this problem and you could probably make it so people of a certain age can see it.

Then why does Goku have an erection in your banner on Moddb if you want it child friendly?

It's not difficult to go into your profile settings and change your date of birth to 1974 to gain access to such places. That's why ridiculous "put in your date of birth to view this page" things on the web are utterly pointless. When Steam asks me for my DOB I just hit 1/1/WhateverRandomYearMyMouseStopsOn cause it doesn't matter. Same with YouTube. Anyway Prozac made the point that when you try and hide things from kids, they only want to find out more about it, better to have everything out in the open and moderate it properly then try and stop kids from getting involved.

Or have to verify your Social Security card to get access, I've seen forums / sites do this. Course, not alot of people like doing that.

Well then make it have a check bar that you accept responsibility for entering th 18+ Section.

That's not going to work internationally. I don't have a social security number and my drivers license number wouldn't verify.

-edit

When you were 14 and you saw that little checkbox on that really awesome porn site, did it stop you from clicking it and going in? Yeah it probably releases ESF from any legal repercussions with minors viewing unsuitable content, but looking at it from their point of view (and moderators/admins - correct me if I'm wrong), it's not a legal reason they restrict discussion on such topics, but a moral reason.

It didn't stop me anywhere but it specifically states weather they were willing to see gruesome and mature things. If they accept that without their parents consent it is their fault. Let alone Sex Ed is taught normally at Grade 5 now it seems.

yeah, because people are totally going to be willing to put verify their social security card to have access to a special section on a dragonball z forum.

........get the **** out of here. If some people refuse to verify their steam account on these forums, what the **** makes you think they'll activate their social security number on these forums?

Possibly the only thing that can be done about this.

The main reason these threads are closed is because a host of this site has asked us to.

We have respected his request.

I mean thats ok and all but even still I would like to see a sub-forum for us to talk about more mature things like that topic. Those topics are the topics I actually like to see. People have great debating skills around here and I enjoy reading those topics on why it should and shouldn't be legal and all of that.

But that would keep us from talking about it like so. I mean I fully respect that Admin here but I would like to see an 18+ sub-forum to talk about such topics.

I've tried suggesting an 18+ sub-forum multiple times and it keeps getting shot down. Hell, I wouldn't even care if they made it invisible, much like the force pit or secret squirrel sections, until you signed up for it.
