I was wondering if there's a huge difference between a card with 128MB or the same card with 256MB?

Especialy for these cards:
ATI Radeon X1600 128 MB - ATI Radeon X1600 256 MB
nVidia GeForce 7600GT 128MB - nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB

Anyone care to inform me? =)

Not really, other than the obvious increase in video memory on the 256MB one. Other than that, no difference.

For those cards, as Spunky said "Not really...".

128 x 8 = 1024.

Is that the answer you were looking for?

I understand English isn't your first language, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. The problem with your analysis is that the two cards Bolteh's asking about don't necessarily have the ability to juggle 256MBs of data around when it's needed, whether that be from large textures, higher resolutions, anti-aliasing, and more.

A better question would be the new 8800GTS 320MB version vs the original 640MB version. I could definitely see the 640MB version being a better buy because of the more demanding settings people will be playing at on these enthusiast cards.

I'll tell you....with the X1600 you'll get to play Oblivian on lowest details at about 2 FPS , while with the 7600GT you'll be able to play fine at medium settings. Is that a good comparison for you? Pay more for the 7600GT, unless your sveing up for a 8800....

It's because I'm torn between these 4 models.

As you can see, it's only a small price difference, but is it worth it?

Some important information: I hardly game, the only games I play are Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, Half-Life 2 + mods and Warcraft 3 from time to time (yes, they all work on an iMac).. I work with 3D Studio Max (don't know if that's important for a GPU)

:3 now if its the x1600 pro, then its another story.

I've seen benchmarks of that card with Oblivion, and it was quite impressive, a friend of mine also has the Pro version and can run oblivion with full settings (not sure if he uses AA), with little or none decrease in framerate.

No, trust me dude, the X1600PRO is a lower end card then the 7600GT, and performs as such. I've seen many benchmarks, the 7600Gt is usually compared head-to-head with the X1950PRO, but it blows the X1600PRO out of the water.

I suggest you not argue this, I don't want to start pulling out benchmarking links...

The X1950Pro >> the 7600GT (Click Here for benchmarks).

Anywho... I think Bolteh's got the answer he's been looking for. I won't close the thread, but let's let it die on its own or until Bolteh has more questions.

I know that the X1950 is a lot better, because of its 256bit memory, but I'm trying to tell those who belive that the X1600 can be compared to the 7600GT are fighting for future resulkts.

Guess I just misread your intention. Sorry D: ~Smiff

My 64Mb Mobility Radeon 9700 Can play Oblivion.
I get about 30-50fps outdoors, about 25ish around an oblivion gate.
I have gotten the shorter grass mod, Which increases performance allot!
And the remove the fogginess underwater, which helps allot also.
And I have gotten the shaper textures mod which increases texture size to 4000x4000 or something.
Resolution is set to 800x600
Bloom is turned off.
Distant landscape, trees and buildings are set to on.
Texture size: Medium
Tree, Actor, Item, Object fade is on highest.
Grass and view distance is on highest.
All shadows are turned off.
Specular Distance set to highest.
Water Detail is set to highest,
Water reflections and ripples are turned on.
Window reflections on, Blood decals on.
No Anti-Aliasing but running with 4x Anisotropic filtering, which only made me loose about 3-4 fps.
If you are unable to play oblivion, Try using... "Old Oblivion" You can then run the game on even the Radeon 9200 and Geforce FX 5200 as Old Oblivion can drop the level of vertex and pixel shading back down to 1.1
And from what I have noticed in most games, (Even Need for speed 1).
That with a 64Mb card, if you have all settings on highest you get "Pausing" Every now and then, Which I can really only point the finger to the low amount of RAM present on the 3D accelerator.
So if my Card can play Oblivion, I'm sure that the 1600 can play it with most settings on highest.

Lol

Well maybe i'm confused with the RX1600 pro, which has an R more then the X1600 :p , because I am sure the RX is fast, perhaps the X isn't.

Its amusing tho how you "threaten to pull out benchmarks results" as if you are about to pull out your lightsaber.

It depends, some video cards have a less quality memory implemented when they are in 256, and that's why sometimes 128 mb is better than 256 mb sometimes, at least in Medium End and Low End video cards.
As an example: I have a BBA(built by ati) Radeon 9500 PRO "128 MB" in this computer, and a friend of mine gave me a Sentey Radeon 9700PRO 256MB(the new version with less memory clocks) It had 200 mhz DDR in the memori, my 9500 PRO got 277, the Radeon 9700 only got to ~247Mhz without artifacts, and my 9500 got about ~327Mhz without artifacts and I didn't get farer because I fear it could burn because of the 35?C on the ambient(It's spring and really freaking hot). That's what I mean with the memory's quality, and it affects both, performance and overclocking.

Going to go for this model:

24" TFT
2,16-GHz Intel Core Duo 2
1GB 667 MHz DDR2-SDRAM (PC2-5300)
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB GDDR3 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA-disk
8x SuperDrive with dual-layer (CD-RW/DVD-RW)
Keyboard (Belgian) and Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X (Dutch)

BTW, Smith: I noticed that it was either a 7300GT with 128MB or a 7600GT with 256MB :) I knew I saw 7600 somewhere ;)

Anyway, thanks for the information.. But I figured that if I'm going to spend lots of money on a new computer, I might as well do it good and spend a godly amount of money on it ^^ And tbh.. 2024€ (price for students from my school) is a very decent price for a 24" monitor, a computer like that, OS, very good keyboard and mouse (mighty mouse > any PC mouse I ever used)..
