Is there a max number of different materials a Half-Life model can have?
If there isn't how will many materials affect it?

For the second question i meant that if something wrong happens to the model if it has more than 10 materials.

You can have as many materials as you want. The only thing that affects performance is the over all resolution of the combined materials.

For a HL1 model, you don't need anymore than a 1024x1024 area cut into multiple materials. That's only when it's compiled though. I would suggest skinning each UV at a high resolution to begin with, then scale it whens it's complete.

I'm sure there is a limit eventually, but Ive seen multiple specialists models (99% rips) that had bits and pieces from well over 10 texture sheets, so I think your fine.

probly best to keep it to an absolute minimum tho. unless its a huge model of course,

I disagree, with hl1 models and thier 256 colour limits I'd use as many small sheets as you could.

Well it is a huge model, a building actually.
Figured out that it would be easier to make HL1 map buildings from models and map brushes for collision. It's more of a project for me...
Here's what i mean:

Still need to work on the lower part, but i figured that it would take a big amount of materials, with it being.. big.

You could get away with using 2 on that I reckon. 1 for the glass (which you could do in the chromy style so it looks reflective as you move around it) and another one for everything else.
