Help installing games into Steam

Haven't been here in a while.

Got back into steam because i'm grounded and i'm trying to install mods.

I had hl2 installed and I was able to get all of the source mods to work, then I try to install my old version of cs retail so I could play hl1 mods and I just can't seem to get them to work.

I put the Hl1 mods into this folder
C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\amitron\Counter-Strike

and they don't show up on the steam "my games" list. When I try to run the games an error message shows up "can't find hl.exe".

Can anyone help?

Did you actually install the mdirectly from the disk or enter you cd key into steam and et steam to gather the required game content for it?. Also you should be able to get hl1 with retail cs through steam if I reeber correctly. I always had to reinstall esf when I went to a few net cafes to steam so I could play online, during the instalation I made sure steam was not running (that might work if you close steam while installing them).

Unless my memory is broked, you can't install mods with only CS. Go with what Saiyan_Overlord said, and see if you can download (legally =O) a copy of HL from Steam. Install, run once, install mods, then PLAY!
