For the people that doesn't know the money system, like Prozac stated, watch Zeitgiest: Addendum().
It's a (long, but very interesting) movie about country debts, and the money system which is used in the world.

And IF you've got some extra time, i suggest you watch the other zeitgeist movies aswell, really interesting.
Also a bit of reality check tho

But seriously, when the country that could simultaneously fight off three major countries has debt problems, who can possibly make them answer for it?
Refusing to trade with us.

By the way, we're stretched thin enough just in Iraq and Afghanistan. What, in the name of your god, makes you think we could take on "three major countries."

I think I speak for most people here when I say you're an ignorant ****.
Also might I add that your parents did a horrible job raising you. Seriously, saying it's oké to take stuff that others earned just because they are stronger..
Were either of those comments necessary to make your point? Both are attacks made against the person, rather than the person's comments (a fallacy whose name I'm sure you know).

Please, try to avoid getting so... charged in this discussion. That goes for everyone.

It's uncalled for, and to be honest I deserve a warning, but I felt it had to be said. I do apologize for the language used, but I also stand behind what I said.

Know what? Screw you, Aunt Sophie, did I insult your mother or something?

Here's the rub, I've never been especially interested in politics unless there are some notorious, far-reaching implications, so I don't KNOW how this stuff works. When I ask, "how do people make the guy who can take on the world pay?", I'm not being snide or rhetorical, or (for ****s sake) saying I would AGREE with forcefully extorting other countries, I WANT an answer to that question, and to the ones who gave me one without mis-interpreting the subtext of what I was saying in the worst possible way, thank you.

Yes, I'm ignorant of politics. Nice job enforcing my feeling that asking legitimate questions in order to become less ignorant just gets some douche-bag yelling at you.

And you leave my damn parents out of this. I don't have too many illusions that they're a bit more worried about keeping us in our home than supporting the common good, but they're good people, and I'm lucky to have them. They're parents I don't feel ashamed to let talk with my friends, they're tolerant and wise, having no problem with two of my best friends being gay and being able to at least debate with and hear-out more liberal proposals, and not crucify people for disagreeing with them. They're not "Ma and Pa 'Whittaker", and I'm not "The Angry German Kid".

If you know what the word "rhetoric" means (this word is important, and not everyone knows what it means, which is why I mention it - it's not meant in an offensive way), I recommend you read your own post and analyze it in that context... The way you write things impart information as well as what you write. Basically, the way you wrote that, you imparted to a lot of people (as the perception of messages is to some degree subjective) that you were an arrogant, ignorant douche. You might not be an arrogant, ignorant douche (and I'm not suggesting you are), but that's what it seemed like, and thusly people will respond in a regard suitable to the situation.

You first need to realise that america can not take on the world. Not alone. America is as dependant on Europe and Asia as Europe is of America and Asia.

Importing and exporting goods is what make a stable country. If a country shuts itself off or is forcefully shut off by others, then that country will die out. Its a fact and it goes for all the countrys on this planet. The more "advanced" a country is the more its dependant on the market.

Simply saying "Give us this or we take it by force" will result in the bully scenario, where the bully looses all support and ends up in starvation cause he has noone to feed him. Quite similarly a country would enter a crysis and it would continue untill its either conquerd (think of ww2 germany) or the people rise up and overthrow the government (think of the Russian or French revolution)

55 thousand, billion dollar debt? Somehow, I think that is more money than currently exists in this world.

Compared to the GDP, it's a very bizarre number that confuses me as well. I mean, the global GDP is 60 trillion... So the US owes a debt equivalent to the world GDP?

The reason come states are outraged, from my understanding, is because the health care bill takes away a lot of the people's freedoms. I, and many other people, have not read the entire bill, this I know, but so far from what I'm told (read: what I'm told; i.e don't take what I say as pure 100% fact), is that with this health care bill, one can't choose their own doctor, etc. A lot of your freedoms that you once had will be taken away. This angers people, because America is supposed to be all about freedom.

But at the same time, I think America is on the right track. A health care system should be developed, and hopefully this will work itself out in the long run. Europe does a great job with health care, it'd be nice to see the U.S adopt the same principal (I'd like to say the same thing about their college/schooling system).

According to the CIA World Factbook, the global GDP of 2009 was $70.24 trillion, with the United States GDP at an estimated $14.26 trillion.
I'm confused, mostly because the CIA World Factbook seems to disagree with your number of 70.24 trillion. In any case, the debt is insane.

Edit: Oh, and MC, check your source. It says 2001. Mine is the actual source...

Stop watching Fox, and stop listening to people who do.
Words to live by.

People keep talking about how freedom is important to them, yet I don't remember any real discussion when the patriot act was pushed down throats. (Though I'll admit that was a "different" time all together.)

Personally I am all for freedoms, however to a certain extend. It is obvious to me that people can't make all the choices in life themselves because they are ill informed, or simply do not understand how it effects them, guidance is needed. Absolute freedom of choice would not work. Hence why the government occasionally needs to do stuff that might go against the will of the people. (I know this is a dangerous statement to make, because governments can be the ill informed ones too)

Health care should be about giving care to those in need, it should not be a sector that should go for profits, because a human life is worth more, then that bonus the higher ups make from the misery of others.

The "funny" thing about all of this actually is that, right now, the American health care system is based on turning a profit. People who are insured can get denied treatment because it might not be effective, so it's not cost effecient. The sick won't get insurance because they are not profitable. (How incredibly inhuman)
Americans opposing the bill, tend to say this is good thing, because it keeps costs down, and people apparently should be able to make a profit out of situations like this (Correct me if I'm wrong here, this however is what we've over here have been mostly hearing). However, even though percentage wise, Americans are the least insured right now when it comes to health care. (Going by civilized countries only.) They pay, on average, the most. Does this mean they also receive better care? No, statistically Americans aren't doing that great, Life expectancy is lower, infant deaths are higher and this is pretty much consistent almost every field.

So while paying the most on average, taking into account the least amount of people insured percentage wise. The situation right now isn't... ideal. Which is why national health care is such a good solution. Costs will go down because it's not a company trying to make a profit. More people insured, increasing the quality of living in America.
The negatives? Yes, it might take you a bit longer to get non life threating situations taken care of, like that birthmark that's getting a bit darker or w/e. But that's not a big price to pay for those 32 million uninsured people, who life in constant fear of something happening, or the other group of insured people who are denied life saving treatments.. right?

Now I know it's hard taking just my word for it. But please, just do your own research, look at what's happening in countries with a national health care system. (Which is most of them.)
In most of those countries, if not all, the quality of life is rated higher. This alone should be enough insensitive to get something that looks like a proper system right? I mean what's more important in life, then leading a good one?

Ah but thats where politics come in. The left hand does something so even if its good the right hand will say its bad and go against it. And people are so swayed by sides and false info that noone even dares to think for themselves.

Surely over recent years you've noticed how incompetent government is. I'm not even going to argue that the model of government is a business that intends to make a profit and because of this corruption is an inevitable result, which I could very well ague, just going to point out that government can not give you all you'll ever want.
People have to take responsibility for themselves because governments are not much better at doing it than you are yourself. Think of Sarah Palin's Yahoo email getting hacked or the British MP that sent huge amounts of private (child welfare) data unencrypted on a CD in the post, which was then lost.
Think about America in the Cold War. They made some of the worst mistakes a government could ever make- they spread so much mis-information about Russia that they lost track of who and what information was being spread and started to believe their own mis-information to the point that the were shaking in their boots about the fear-mongering they'd spread to scare others.
Then you have the mistakes those in power- Presidents, Prime Ministers, even Kings- make. Dumb grammatical errors (Bush, Palin, Dan Quayle), collapsing into tears or frustration during discussion (Gordon Brown- he also picks his nose during session) and passing important bills without most represenatives even reading the bill (This one happens all the time, including the recent health bill, the original bill to create the federal reserve, lots of dodgy bills like this under Nixon too)..
Not only are they only Human, they're generally much more incompetent than the average person. (Understandably- the stress of working for government, having everyone rely on you)
I suppose this is true, the government does **** up, It's filled with people who do want to work for the country, you have those that want to fill their pockets.
It's a shame really, however unavoidable. Can't say a lot about this besides that even though the government isn't perfect, you do have to trust in them..

You make a good point here and it's actually helped me see why most people want health care, but for what it's worth I think most people that are opposed to it are so because they don't want to be forced to pay for other people's operations- Is the principle of taxation really compatible with the principle of charity? Is it even kind to give if you're just being forced to give?
Surely it would be far less of a bureaucratic mess and entirely more ethical to have a health insurance system based on charity to others. Those that genuinely don't care can opt out of paying, and you can opt out of paying to someone in particular if you have political or personal reasons to do so. I think you'll find that most people who don't support health but have money (There are those, often living in caravans in Texas somewhere, that oppose socialism because taxes are making them poor) will happily donate to the cause when it's their choice.
I find the comment of not wanting to pay for your fellow human being awkward when coming from Americans, considering the states is mostly a Christian country.
The thing is, people are individuals, mostly everyone realizes that. However, people should also realize that as a collective they are the country. They are what makes a country tick, through voting, working and paying taxes. Even though you are not using healthcare, paying for it will reduce your own cost, as will it reduce everyone else's cost. This works pretty much like taxes. I can understand how it doesn't feel fair. Because frankly it isn't, some people use more care then others, but getting hospitalized for about three days in my country. Just for bed and standard services provided, you are charged a lot. Reaching the amount of money involved through monthly payments takes about two to three years.
If you don't like paying for others, think about how you're just making your life financially safer for yourself. Not only does this decrease what you are currently paying for health care, it will also make sure you won't lose your home if you lose a finger.

You'll also lose some of the best Doctors in your country (Likely to emigrate to mine, England, actually) because they want to be paid fair wages. The Health Care bill pays all Doctors equally whether they're Surgeons, Professors, veterans that have had many cases or newcomers that just completed internship.
Now I don't know if this is true, seems rather communistic to me. Still seeing as nearly every civilized country in the world uses a similar system, going abroad, I think, wouldn't make a huge difference in pay.
Also, the best doctors in the world tend to get were they are for the profession hey chose and love, not money. however this is purely speculation from my part.

Those uninsured people are so because they can't afford to insure themselves. If genuinely wish to spend your own money in order to help them, good on you. But I hope you won't turn around in anger when the government taxes the **** out of your paycheck. I hope it makes you happy to see what good you're doing. (Except that the majority of your taxes go to national defense- you can be angry about that)
People don't like paying taxes, no one does. However it's not optional
I'm actually from the Netherlands, I get taxed pretty bad compared to mostly every other country in the world. Does this piss me off? **** yes.. However statically seeing, suicides are low, crime is low, our infrastructure is amazing and overall, we always score pretty high on international researches for countries like to life in. (Forgot what this is called again and I honestly can't be arsed to look into it right now! :p)
It's a bit mind boggling, because people are greedy in nature. Survival of the fittest counts for us humans too, you can see this when a national disaster happens. (Haiti etc. everyone for themself.)
However being greedy, for the country as a whole, doesn't work that well. Sure it does well for you, but for everyone else not that much. Humans should really evolve towards a different state of mind, it would help the world out a lot.

Pretty idealist stuff, I know.. >.>
