With Sony implementing Blu-ray drives into the PS3, and Microsoft similarly bringing out HD-DVD models of the 360, both to be unveiled in a few days at E3, I was wondering which is 'better'? Blu-ray definately seems to have the capacity advantage, but comes with the hefty price tag, plus I don't think it's backward compatible with standard DVD's, whereas the HD-DVD format/players are, and will be cheaper. It seems very close to call.

As I read in a magazine, it sounds like the old VHS vs Something war.

I'm rooting for Blu-Ray, its time they give these things unique names.

I'm personally more interested in HD-DVD to be honest, It'll be cheaper, & what's more dual layer dvd blanks could also become a more affordable method to me to shove what ever I please on to a dual layer dvd by then. I have a feelnig i'll be using HD-DVD soon though. I personally would give time for blu-ray to reach an acceptance in the market & wait for it to mature.

Oh, sweet.

Another piece of interesting information regarding Blu-ray appeared at last night's Sony Press Conference, where the spokesperson said something like 80% of the movie studios are backing Blu-ray. I'm not sure if that's 'instead of HD-DVD' or 'as well as HD-DVD'.

Wow, you can barely scratch the Blue ray disk's? That is going to come in handy. I heard they can fit a couple gbs onto a Blue ray disk, making games become HUGE and super detailed. Am I correct?

i think the word couple is an understatement.

standard dvds at most can hold 8-9 gb on a dual layer disk, and usually more than enough after compressing audio/video files.

blu-rays can hold 50 gb o_O

Check the Wiki link I posted about Blu-ray

Single Layer: 25gb
Dual Layer: 50gb
Quad Layer: 100gb
Eight Layer: 200gb

Compared to HD-DVD:

Single Layer: 15gb
Dual Layer: 30gb
Triple Layer: 45gb

and DVD:

Single Layer: 4.7gb
Dual Layer: 8.5gb

So a dual layer Blu-ray disc has more storage space than a triple layer HD-DVD disc. But do movies (or games for that matter, 360 + PS3) really need that much space for HD content? Unless you wanted a whole series of Lost in 1080p on one disc, I don't see the need.

Well expect games to be using alot of those 50gb. The PS3 is a next gen gaming console, the amount of models and textures they will probably be making will cost alot of space. Also think of other benefits 50gb discs have, developers could easily add a couple of demo's from other games for marketing reasons, they could fit more than 1 game on 1 disc (Re-release of a couple of old games on one disc?). I predict that in the short run HD-DVD will probably win alot of people, and Microsoft will once again get full of themselves. But in the long run when people wish for more space on discs and Blu-Ray's become cheaper, Sony will prevail.

. . . and you all buy the new digital copyright scheme that screws the honest consumers.

Pathetic. I'll be boycotting both.

Why? Sony said they won't be downscaling the quality on analog connections, meaning you can still use current HDTVs. Plus.. can't easily put DRM into analog connections, as I recall. :x

In any case, HDCP will be circumventable shortly after release, if a quarter of the things I've heard are true.

HD-DVD's will be cheaper to buy simply because they'll be cheaper to produce. That'll probably win over consumers more than the 10gb size difference.

That reasoning is too simple. BluRay has the support of a much higher percentage of movie studios. That alone will be the deciding factor!

BluRay
Pros: Much more studio support. More storage. MUCH more durable.
Cons: Price.

HD-DVD
Pros: Cheap(er).
Cons: Not much studio support, inferior storage, inferior durability.

It doesn't take a genius to see which will prevail.

I think it's up to the porn industry right now. If they decided to distribute porn using bluray technology, bluray will win. Thats what I read anyway...

Unless there's a severe consumer backlash, the DRM isn't going anywhere. And in any case, as I posted above, the DRM will be broken shortly after release--HDCP is well known to be flawed.

They will also cost alot to produce. Extra/more detailed content means more hours spent making the game which means you pay a higher price at the store. Think how much more expensive console games are now, and think what it would cost to make a game using the full 50 GB, or even 20 GB.

I think it's up to the porn industry right now. If they decided to distribute porn using bluray technology, bluray will win. Thats what I read anyway...
The people that are going to own these new disc players are the same people who know that porn is readily available on the internet, for free. Who pays for porn in this day and age anyway?
