trying to make this thread as friendly to non-players, as to players. so here's how it works.

you post a guitar trick that you think is cool. you might already be able to play it, or want to learn how to, or you could just think "hey man, that's really cool"!
this isn't a thread for posting "lolz my favorite riff!" sure i understand that sometimes playing uber fast is great for the track and it makes sense. but playing fast isn't really an interesting trick.

so, i'll go first. i think using delay effects to simulate multiple guitars is ******* cool.

and paul gilbert has some interesting tricks too

That really is kick-ass use of the delay-effect. Fairly flawless execution as well.

this is a harmonic capo, it's pretty cool.

how it works:
normally, a capo is used to raise the bass note of a guitar, essentially moving the nut forward by whatever the tonal amount you're looking for (example: putting a capo on the third fret changes the guitar from base E, to base G).
a harmonic capo hovers over the strings at a regular harmonic pitch (in the case of the video, an octave over base E). causing every note that is played to create an additional harmonic note. it's pretty cool!

he's also using a pretty interesting left hand tapping/hammer technique, tapping entire chords at once creating one melody, while his picking hand creates a second melody.

Squealies aren't really that tricky or impressive... I consider them standard in guitarists' repertoire. I liked the harmonic capo though! I wouldn't mind having one of those. Maybe I should investigate whether I can find them around here.

Edit: Also, the principle of a squealie is that you hit the note TWICE. So your thumb touches the string JUST after you hit it, creating a harmonic in that place. It helps to use heavy distortion, though you can also hear this effect on acoustic guitars. Just if you want a short-version of how it's done. You can try striking a note and then touching the string for a millisecond. You'll notice it creates a harmonic. Not sure on the specifics of this, but Lee probably knows how it works.

It's not really a guitar TRICK, but the technique of Erik Mongrain is quite impressive. I haven't seen a lot of people play an acoustic guitar the way he does.

pinch harmonics (squeelies) are fairly standard, but a trick none the less!

they also have to be done at more specific places than you might think. you can get some form of pinch harmonic from just about anywhere that you're picking, but a lot of them sound really bad, or they will cut off very early. there's a few "sweet spots" to look out for.
essentially, these places are at very specific positions along the string (right the way from nut, to bridge). they occur at every 8th of the strings length, and have increasing resonance the closer to the middle (12th fret) of the string you get. in terms of finding these spots without a ruler... look at where regular harmonics occur.
3rd, 5th, 7th, 12th frets... mirror it the other way round, find where (roughly) the 3rd and 5th frets would be if they were at the bridge end instead of the nut. to test it out, place your fretting finger on the string lightly, and pluck with your picking hand. you should be able to hear a regular harmonic. if you can get a regular harmonic, that's the "sweet spot" for a pinch harmonic. it will get you the best sounds.

you can also achieve squeels that sound very similar, but have a very different attack from using a tremelo arm. hold the arm firmly, then "tap" it down to cause vibration over the strings. use your fretting hand to mute whichever strings you like, while placing a finger over one of the harmonic points listed earlier (3rd fret A string works wonders for this). almost as soon as you've done the tap on the arm, pull it back as sharply as you can without breaking the strings, and you'll get an amazing squeel, from there you can dive-bomb like a boss.
i learned that one trying to copy some of the sounds satriani makes :D

Avenger, what that guy is doing could be considdered a trick actually. it's more a clever combination of techniques, but isn't that what all tricks are?

he's tapping notes with his fretting hand, the guitar is probably tuned to an open tuning (sounds like G). his picking hand is working some real magic though, by lightly tapping harmonic points he's getting some amazing melodies going.
here's another example of that style of playing. and i sold this guy his guitar like 7 years ago when i worked for Sound Control, hahaha!

i've always been a fan of people using the body of a guitar to create sounds too! Tommy Emmanuel does it in a lot of his songs

I've watched the vids you guys posted so far. Those who use the body of a guitar are really impressive indeed.
Now i would like to post a song too. It's something i found by accident on youtube but i really like this tune. And it might have some "tricks" in it. :)

it's a good trick, emulating a slide while playing a complex chordal melody.

I'm getting better at getting my fingers to walk across the strings proper but I still cannot sweep pick fast enough for it to actually sound amazing.

This thread is very interesting :) I have now played the electric guitar for 6½ years, and I'm amazed that I can do most of these tricks shown in the videos in this thread. I would like to link a video to a trick i think is cool, but you have actually shown them already, so I'll just sit back and see if anything new and challenging comes up ^^

Btw.. Took years to learn that sweep picking xD

I dunno...maybe those "flamenco like" beat patterns. Starting from 1:50.

Oh and that electric guitar sweep picking sure is awesome and hard at the same time. :D

I'd love any other example of a guy who can play twelve string slide/fingerstyle guitar like that, Lee. :p

I wasn't really impressed by that gadget he used in your video. Sure, the effect is all right, but I wouldn't have a guitar for the purpose of playing like that... Honestly it sounds a bit cheap.

yes, i'm aware that the boys parts are mimed. but they were written/recorded by steve vai, who does a damned good job of slide (on a 6 string).

and this guy does some nice 12 string stuff

also, check out some of the live versions of Wanted, by Bon Jovi, there's a 12 string slide in there too :p
