friend needs help

A friend recently got a new graphics card a "radeon 9000 pro" :O not bad
it seems to run fine in quake 3 however there seems to be a problem with hl(and mods seem to be worse) he recives 99fps in small rooms yet in large open areas the fps fluctuates around 15-20 fps.

radeon 9000 pro
celeron 700
384 mb sdram
8 gig HDD ( 1.5 gig free)
creative sb LIVE!
250 powersupply

installed:
directx 9.0
catalyst 3.2 driver
and has tried running hl in all 3 modes(software,direct3d,opengl)

any help would be much appreciated

yep. i got the same. usely on quake3 and other games you are just walking on the ground. in esf you are flying so it LOADS Frames then normal so it goes slower.. i got the same..

well that just sucks i would imagin that u get a new vid card to improve ur gameplay. 15fps doesnt sould like an improvement. . .

ah well i feel sorry for him if there is no way to fix it

radeon 9000 pro.......... is that supported by direct x 9? Not all cards support directX 9 without a patch, try to update your drivers, and dont just change the modes, try changing the screen resolution in video options

Yes i'd suggest a driver update as well. But HL doesn't use DX9 effects, not even DX8. Perhaps look on the ATI page if they have a note somewhere about issues with Quake1 engines.

ok guys thx for the help but he found the problem radeon 9000 pro has issues with hl. and the driver "cat 3.2" only makes it worse. he had ta revert to cat3.1 driver and now he recives 99fps and about 60fps in large open spaces. hopefully cat3.3 when it comes out will address the issues with hl. still if u know of a way to improve this still feel free to reply

I was going to say i'm using a Gefore 4 Ti 4200 x8 AGP and i've never had any problems with small or large maps, its runs very smooth for me


But a computer running a Celeron 700 with a Radeon 9000 thats funny hehe
The card is more expensive then the computer

lol he is doing upgrades progressively so it doesnt hert his pocket as much as an all out assualt and yes it is funny that his card is worth more than the puter

.. even i got around 70 to 100fps when i am walking. but when i fly i get around 30 to 50 fps.
