Insulting people is not a form of expression and never will be.

Not only are you absolutely wrong, but you've also completely disregarded my example. If someone says something horrible, we should have the right to say, "That was horrible." We're already allowed to say that in a post, so why can't we give someone negative rep as well? If someone decides to abuse the system, then it's your job as a moderator to address that person's transgression and take care of the problem. I don't understand why you seem to think someone would prefer insulting someone through the rep system over making an actual post. Just because it isn't out in the open doesn't mean the rules don't apply. The rules that apply to inflammatory private messages would also apply to the comments you leave people when giving positive or negative rep.

The problem isn't that one or two people abuse things it thats the vast majority of people who used the rep system before just shat out negative rep for everything. For every meaningful rep you have theres 100 more "ZOMG BALLS LAWL!" negative reps. It's an easily abusable system that was unsurprisingly abused.

It is necessary because the community has proven itself time and time again to be incapable of being responsible people with out being watched over all the time. This isn't really the kind of forum with a serious adult like atmosphere and thus when everyone is or acts like teenagers the mods are forced to treat everyone like how they act. If you don't like it then act more responsible or if you can't do that theres plenty of other forums.

And besides this forum is extraordinarily lenient. Like beyond normal reason lenient. If you tried half the crap people do on here in something like the PA forums of the SA forums then you would be banhammered so hard you wouldn't have internet access for a year.


The sad fact is that if everyone actually acted as mature as they moan about then it would matter if theres "harsh" moderation. Of course another fact people forget is that this isn't the united states. There isn't an irrefutable constitution that gives you the right to say anything you want. If you say something and for instants Cuc says you shouldn't say that. Then you don't get to say that. There is no right to free speech or anything like that on the internet.

If someone in charge of where you post says you don't get to say X, Y, and Z then you don't get to. And if you really are mature enough that shouldn't matter because you can either not post extreme stuff or go to a new forum. It shouldn't matter because you would be a responsible adult who doesn't throw tantrums over not being able to have bewbies in your sig or whatever.

It didn't work out before because there were too many people abusing the system at the same time. Our community isn't nearly as large as it once was, so cracking down shouldn't be a problem. If you don't believe we're mature enough to handle the rep system, simply get rid of it. If even after all of the political and religious threads we've had that ended up relatively okay doesn't suggest the community has matured, save for the one or two kids who turn everything into an Anti-American diatribe, I don't know what else there is for us to do.

As of now, the rep system is useless and broken. I can give positive rep just because, but if someone said something genuinely disturbing, we can't do anything about it. We can only wait for a mod to step in and say, "That was disturbing." There's nothing wrong with empowering a small community.

I don't know what the PA or SA forums are, but in the forums I do frequent, I can say just about anything and people will either laugh, get angry, agree or disagree. We'll argue until we burn ourselves out, shake hands at the end, and move on. The mods only step in if you do something completely despicable like post cartoon porn. The ESF forum is lenient compared to the two forums you mentioned, I guess, but even with the relaxed rules, it's draconian compared to the others.

Again, we're already saying, "That was ****ed up." in our posts. Giving someone negative rep and saying, "That was ****ed up." in the comment part isn't going to make the world stop spinning. We'd be doing what we're already doing, except there'd be a slightly worse consequence if you care about your rep score.

We had the negative rep thing on just a few days ago when the plug in was uploaded and yes it was abused. Which is why it isn't on right now.

But just because you are allowed to do whatever you want on one forum doesn't allow you to do the same thing on every other forum on the internet.

If I make a forum all about sex somewhere I can't come in here and start posting hardcore porn.

You had the negative rep thing on, it was abused, and the moderators did absolutely nothing to combat the situation, other than remove it. Of course it isn't going to work if you refuse to enforce the rules. If people see that you're taking the rep system seriously, they'll think twice about abusing it in much the same way most people actively try to avoid getting warnings for the posts they make.

Yes, just because I'm able to say something on one forum doesn't mean I can say it here. That's awesome. That also completely missed the point I was making. You're saying the rules here are extremely relaxed compared to the two forums you mentioned. I'm saying the rules hear are draconian when compared to the forums I frequent.

The way I see it is if everyone wants to moan about how much of a nazi rule this forum is under then I should be able to ban anyone I want at any time.

Since everyone is so convinced that this place is just the most horrible place on Earth then damn I guess I should just start banning everyone I don't like.

All we're asking for is to be able to give someone negative rep. That's it. We're not asking for free reign. We're not asking to be made mods. We're not asking for true ultimate power. We just want to be able to downvote someone who says something that deserves to be downvoted.

Hey I'm not the one trying to insult the other party in every single post.

Every single post you have made has been nothing but a cheap side jab bordering on insulting towards me. This attitude is a perfect example of why people shouldn't be allowed to say whatever they want because all they do is go out of their way to insult people.
