hmmm im not sure what happens in america with tv companies, but in the uk, any channel is either BBC (payed by the people, through government), or it is advertising, which means it is a private channel, they cannot let swearing or nudity come on untill the watershed (which is about 9pm i think), In many ways the UK censoring is not as bad as in the USA, the uk, it can show full nudity, but you cant see an errection, or women with their legs spread, and no hardcore sex
. Personally i think that showing anythin after the watershed (appart from the obvious) should be uncensored.
We've been doing about this in Psychology (media influences) and we found out, the way things get censored at the BBC, is one guy sits in a room, looks though each program and he edits the bad bits out, meaning it is totally up to his judgement :S.
Total censorship is very Nanny state, and insulting to the viewer, as it tells you what you are fit enough to watch. No censorship isnt pleasant, as i have noticed (in the uk anyway) many children have a full abusive vocabulary, not that they learned it of tv, parents are much to blame as well, but the media and fashion at this point in time finds swearing socially acceptable.
Im not sure about censorship, i almost stand on both sides, one of my main principles is freedom of speach and clearly censorship is an infringement on this freedom, but on the other hand, there are some bad effects from no censorship. The point is, shouldnt the parents be in control of what their children watch, and if you dont like something on TV, there's other channels, so whats the problem? If you dont like the language, it doesnt mean you are right in making it illegal for other people to hear it, thats totally assuming you know whats best for them, and its degrading to people judgement. In a land of liberty and freedom, people, in their own house, in front of their own TV, should decide what is suitable for them and their children to watch. It isnt the place of sum guy who thinks he knows much better than you. We have the technology these days to make sure children cant watch certain shows or channels, and shouldnt this be implemented so the family can decide what they can watch (which is democrating and localised) rather than being told, because this would solve the problem completely, people who wanted censored TV for whatever reason, and people who wish to be able to watch it without it being censored could chose to do so.
